From fundraising to glassmaking

Hi, I’m Eva of Eva Glass Design
I am a glass artist and designer-maker living in Bristol, UK, who creates stained glass and kiln-formed glass window art, homeware and jewellery.

As a child I was always drawing and making things; and like a magpie I've always loved shiny, pretty things. After finishing a degree in Sociology I worked for many years in Bristol's voluntary sector. I started working with glass in 2004 through evening courses at Bristol School of Art. Here I learned how to create stained glass windows using traditional leadwork techniques, as well as more modern ways of working with glass, including fusing glass in a kiln. This turned out to be what I love doing the most, and I now specialise in creating collections of fused glass window art, homeware and jewellery under the brand Eva Glass Design. I also design and make stained glass windows to commission; and other techniques I employ include screen-printing, mosaic, copper-foiling and etching.

Fused glass creates fabulous wall and window art and homeware, but there is always an element of risk and I can never be quite certain how a piece is going to turn out until I open the kiln. This keeps me on my toes! In my fused glass jewellery I use sparkling dichroic glass which is specially manufactured to show different colours and textures when it is moved around.

My work is primarily designed to interact with natural light to bring patterns of colour to interiors. The versatility of glass types and techniques make it a fascinating medium to work with, and I have always loved how the shades of coloured glass change in different light. Most of my work is inspired by the nature I immerse myself within when working in my garden or visiting the countryside.

I also take inspiration from the sea, and our relationship with it. I absolutely love the shades of blue glass that are available to work with, and use a lot of coastal imagery and themes in my work where I love the challenge of representing the myriad colours of water. Principles of balance and proportion are also important to me in the way I design and construct my pieces, which allows them to bring a harmonious feel to interiors.

Commissions for both stained glass window panels and smaller fused glass pieces are always welcome. I enjoy involving my clients in the design processes of commissioned pieces to help them express their creativity and bring their own ideas to life.

I am a member of the Contemporary Glass Society.
