About

A Tale of Two E's and a Guitar

Evendesign came to be when owners/artists Eric Cooke and Erin Fahey found themselves in an unfortunate set of circumstances. The economy had landed Eric in a thankless job delivering packages, and Erin was taking years off her life as a student of landscape architecture. They were bored, broke, and too far away from their friends and family in Denver. But what seemed like a bleak scenario turned out to be the catalyst for a serious artistic breakthrough. One night in the winter of 2009, Eric unexpectedly suggested that they decoupage his guitar. It was a hand me down from Erin’s father, and Eric had taught himself to play in the dull hours when Erin was studying. He was a quick study he seemed fairly attached to his instrument, so when he suggested to Erin that they decoupage the body she was surprised and a little afraid of the outcome. She had been dabbling in decoupage and collage her entire life, but she’d never afforded it any more importance than a hobby. However the fun of the challenge won out over her nerves and in the course of a weekend the guitar was disassembled and covered in a fiery mosaic of meticulously selected paper squares. the result was the glowing guitar now known as The Origin of Even. Eric and Erin were thrilled. It was beautiful. It was hung on the livingroom wall, and after staring at it for a few weeks evendesign was conceived.

Since then Eric and Erin have embraced art as their calling in life, and are constantly working to make evendesign a viable business. They are reaching out to musicians and artists of all kinds, and are particularly proud of their eclectic designs and the playability of the instruments. Typically one or the other artist will take the lead on a given guitar, but there is still collaboration. Most of the completed instruments to date are original designs of their own creation but they have also worked on a few “ commissioned” guitars. These instruments are provided by a customer, and then used to make digital precedents. These precedents are reviewed by the customer and then revised until there is a consensus. Looking forward Erin and Eric intend to include work done on other objects. This effort has already begun with Even If.. a line of collage-based jewelry designed by Erin. There is also discussion about traditional wall art, and furniture.

  • Eric & Erin

    Owner

When Eric & Erin first started dating they never guessed they'd be devoting every spare minute to making they're way as artists. 7 years later they are knee deep in art and sawdust and they couldn't be happier. Two heads are better than one.

  • Erin Marie Fahey

    Maker, Designer

Erin has been a decoupage artist her whole life, but has just recently realized it as her passion. Her knowledge of Photoshop is also an asset to evendesign. Erin loves working on guitars, but she is proud to introduce Even If jewelry.

  • Eric Cooke

    Owner, Maker, Designer

Eric is a business man by day and a artist by night. He is skilled in every aspect of the design process, but his techinical knowledge is invaluable. In addition to being an artist Eric is a self-taught guitarist and song writer

Welcome to even design! We are a husband/wife team that use collage, metal, glitter, glass, paint, crystals, feathers or anything else we can dream up to transform ordinary electric guitars into visually delectable works of art. Imagination, variety, and fun our what fuels our work, and this translates into every instrument. Each creation has a unique personality that manifests itself in vibrant color and imagery.

As important as the designs themselves is our commitment to quality craftsmanship. We want you to know that we take the design and function of our guitars very seriously. All of our guitars are fully functioning and meant to be played. All of the guitars we use are completely disassembled, cleaned and checked. The body and neck are sanded down to create a clean surface and to minimize any changes to the thickness or feel of the instrument.

We are always happy to answer questions about our guitars. Please feel free to contact us with inquiries about any aspect of our work.

Additional policies and FAQs
Even design is always looking for new challenges and we love doing custom guitars for individual customers. As musicians ourselves we understand how important instruments are to the people who play them and because of this we believe that the effective communication of ideas between artist and customer is imperative. Designs for commissioned guitars are distilled from a series of meetings/interviews in which the potential customer provides us with their ideas and precedents for those ideas. The second part of this process is where we share the designs we've formulated based on the client's ideas. We also use questionnaires to gain a better understanding of the customer's tastes and personality.

We design guitars because its fun and custom instruments are no exception. Because of this we reserve the right to refuse requests for commissioned instruments. We do this because there are simply some potential buyers whose vision is not a good fit with what we do. We believe that it is in the best interest of both parties if potential difficulties can be avoided.
