About

Hi! My name is Evvie, and I’m an illustrator from Massachusetts.

My aesthetic is basically witch meets lumberjack. I’m most inspired by natural history, folklore, dream imagery, and occult symbolism.

I grew up in Massachusetts, and harbor a lifelong love and fascination for New England wildlife. Expect to see a lot of critters and trees here, especially those local to northeast America.

I believe in paying my models and giving back for the inspiration we artists take from the natural world, so I donate 5% of my annual profits to charities and organizations that support wildlife, animals, and healthy ecosystems, such as the National Wildlife Federation, the NRDC, Mass Audubon, and regional animal shelters.

I’ve loved drawing since I was itty bitty. I’ve seriously studied art and design for over eighteen years and counting. I have a BA with honors in set design and studio painting from Smith College.

ILLUSTRATION PROCESS

I work from a combination of memory, imagination, and image research, and I have an extensive catalog of my own nature photos that I draw off. Sometimes I do multiple rounds of sketches for a composition, and other times I don't sketch at all.

Once I have a solid idea where a piece is headed, I starting with light geometric guidelines, and pencil in a composition with a 4H drafting pencil. Then I slowly add paint and ink in layers.

I left my oils and acrylics behind and never looked back when I fell in love with watercolor and ink. Watercolor and ink are simple, portable, and challenging. You can’t erase mistakes, and it’s not easy to hide them, either.

The more water you paint with, the less control you have over how the colors dry, yet the way the water carries the pigment feels more intuitive than heavier paints. It’s a constant exercise in balancing control and chaos, and each step of the process is visible somewhere in a finished piece, if you know where to look.

I combine excellence in traditional media with up-to-date tech savvy. To convert an original into a high quality art print, I scan my paintings at hi-res, carefully correct color, and go over each piece with a fine-tooth comb to clean up any little imperfections.

It can take several hours to edit a single complex print! It's tedious, but the results are well worth it!

I proof my prints and do another round of edits as needed before ordering stock to ensure excellent color and quality in the finished products.
