About

A Treasury of Fine Natural Fabrics

How far does a doting mother's quest for pretty dresses for her little girl go? Quite far indeed.

My mumsey, Annakutty George is the fabric hunting, tailor haunting, doting mother of this story. Growing up in Trivandrum, a piece of paradise in South India, we all got our dresses tailored. Mumsey would take me on her visits to 'Happy Tailors' - our family tailor's shop - every month for new dresses. And while mumsey conferred with the tailor about smocked yokes, peter pan collars, ruched skirts, pinnafores, my eyes would be on the bright and textured bits and scraps of fabrics on the shop floor. The highlight of these visits was when the gentleman would hand me a bunch of colorful scraps to take home with me. Many a rainy afternoon was spent playing with the said scraps and later when I could sew, much of the scraps went into making dresses for my dolls.

All through school and college I dabbled in fabrics and arts but the 2000s saw the start of my decade long corporate career. Somewhere in 2007, a chance encounter with a silk dyer helped me re-connect with my arty self. Starting in a very miniscule scale, I designed and supplied hand dyed and hand printed fabrics to seamstresses and home sewists. I now travel extensively within India to visit hamlets where the best weavers work with silk and cottons. Some of their master pieces are best showcased as they are - the brocade silks and gossamer cotton silks. And some, are innovations bestowed upon this crazy eyed, maniacal fabric designer by the kindness of my weavers - the hand woven linen and mini plaid silk cottons are examples.

It was in 2009 that I discovered the profound - ETSY! Many happy purchases later, my own shop FabricTreasury opened on Etsy in 2010.

FabricTreasury's mission is to bring the best of ethically made and sourced, fine natural fabrics to sewists and crafters around the world. Experimenting with textures, weaves and prints is ingrained in FabricTreasury's DNA. With a focus on hand dyed, hand woven and traditionally made fabrics, FabricTreasury hopes to aid in keeping textile traditions alive.

Hugs,

Anne George

Frequently asked questions

Wholesale availability

A large collection is always available here in wholesale bolts - http://www.etsy.com/shop/FabricTreasury?section_id=7803579. Besides this, we have a very beneficial wholesale program for resellers and designers. Please ask for details.

Question: All of your fabrics are woven / knitted with natural yarn?

Answer: Yes, my fabrics are woven / knitted of natural yarn - cotton, linen and silk, except for the stretchable and brocade fabrics. A 5% inclusion of lycra / elastane is present in stretchable fabrics. I would really like to avoid this inclusion at the first available chance, however, the 'stretch' is vital to certain designs. Brocade fabrics contains bullion thread and is not made of natural fiber. Rayon blended fabrics contain natural fibers, but be aware that Rayon fiber is extracted from plant pulp with the help of chemicals.

Question: What are the shipping options available for me?
