About

Falling into Soap

I got into cold process soap making because my mother was interested in find soap that was gentle on her skin, free of detergent and additive, and made from "real" ingredients. I'm one of those people that when they want to learn something, they dive right in. I started out just researching cold process soap so I could find the best choice for her, but I quickly became immersed. I knew pretty early on that I wasn't going to be content with just buying someone else's soap, I wanted to *make* the perfect soap.

I spent months learning all I could, and then finally, made my first soap. There were lots of trials and errors (lots!). But slowly I was able to make adjustments and tweaks to find what I liked best. The hardest part of the process was giving the soap time to cure before I was able to test. But finally, I found a bar of soap they I loved- right amount of "cleaning" power, hard enough, lasted long enough, created enough bubbles, and one that felt good on my skin.

I love that making soap is both a creative outlet as well as a deliberate and scientific one. You can experiment with scents and colors and you can experiment with your recipe. Soaping has become my form of meditation. You have to be fully focused on your task when you make soap, because you're working with some dangerous elements (lye!) and you can't let your mind wander. When I make soap, I am in the present and focused on my task.
