About

The Story Behind the Fat Cats

I'm asked often, “What do you do?” I answer with a smile, “I make pincushion cats.”

Which gets me a look of confusion until I show them a picture of my work. And they proclaim with a smile, “You make pincushion cats!” Usually followed with “These are hysterical!” and “What made you come up with this idea?” And I have to answer with, “It's all because of my big fat black cat Spooky.”

Though that's the very very short answer. The very very long answer goes like this:

But my first sewing experience, unfortunately, ended embarrassingly and appallingly bad. 10+ years ago, I decided I wanted to learn to sew and make a Halloween costume. I sat in front of a sewing machine with the instruction booklet and attempted to sew a rather overzealous costume. I had never sewn anything before but figured, how hard could it possibly be? Needless to say, it was extremely hard and ended pathetically with me crying over my failure and my mom finishing it for me on the day of the party. Next Halloween I gave myself more time, though not necessarily an easier costume, but I did it. I sewed a costume by myself and I liked it! I liked how the costume turned out and I officially liked the process of sewing. I now had basic knowledge of a sewing machine and saw that the creative possibilities were endless. (And I'll add that my costumes have gotten much better and it no longer ends with me crying in a corner.)

But I always did think that the traditional tomato pincushion was boring. I wanted something more original. Specifically, I wanted a cat! A big fat black cat, like my cat Spooky. I wanted one with a big round belly and a small head. Again, shaped just like my Spooky. I saw her staring at me and knew I had my perfect model. Spooky was my Fat Cat.

Though, just because you have an idea doesn't mean you have a product or even a pattern to work from for that matter. Oh no...there were TONS of failed patterns made. TONS of failed prototypes. And I kept them all. I have all my failed cat blob pincushions kept in a box. But then one night, I finally did it. I figured out the exact shape that I wanted. And I have a picture, somewhere, of me proudly displaying my first successful pincushion cat. No idea where that picture is, but I do have it somewhere.

I posted that first pincushion up on Etsy. It was a very simple and basic black cat with a red collar.

I honestly cannot believe how much these pincushions have evolved from that first felt black cat, sitting on all four. Now they're standing up with many wearing very detailed clothing. Some designs include clay, paint, beading and embroidery. I do still try to stick to as much being done in felt as possible, but sometimes the added details really make the character special.

There's been lots of trial and error along the way. And I'll admit I've had my share of disastrous prototype pincushion characters. And unfortunately one major down. I was diagnosed with Lupus which forced me to reevaluate how I did things and make some life changes. I'm still sewing, and I don't plan on stopping, but I do need to do it at a slower pace and take more rest time for myself. Mostly I just need to use common sense, don't push myself too hard, take care of myself and eat better. I'm trying to learn to love those leafy greens!

I'm proud of what these quirky lil' pincushion cats have accomplished! They seem to bring joy to people and that's pretty much all we can do in this world, right? Just try to brighten someone's day and make the world a little happier.

I'm hoping to just keep on going, trying to expand this pincushion product line – along with some new non-pincushion ideas. I have a whole notebook full of ideas just waiting to be made.

And if you've made it through this entire page of rambling, I thank and applaud you! I tend to get excited when I talk about these Fat Cats and my sewing adventures. I hope you found my story enjoyable and that my pincushions bring a smile to your face. I love what I do and hopefully you will too!

I have a blog where I post about crafting, costumes and my love of coffee. Feel free to follow my adventures:

All my items are MADE-TO-ORDER items. Since this item is not the exact one pictured, it may vary slightly from the example photo. Please note, that since all my items are hand made, sizes may vary slightly. Some of the felt I purchase off the bolt and others I purchase in 9x12 inch sheets. Please know, that I put the same effort and care into every cat (or other creation) that I make.

Since I dye some of my pom poms, the color of the pom pom might not match perfectly to the felt used or the body. I try to match the colors as closely as possible.

Unfortunately due to the rising or discontinuing of certain supplies that I use to create my items, my prices are subject to change. But if I quote you a price for a custom item and my prices go up before I finish your item, I will still price your item as the original quoted price.

Also, I do have 2 cats who may wander into my sewing room at some point. They are not allowed to go into the closet where my fabrics and supplies are stored though.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions or comments you may have.

Thanks!
