Here's a close up of the quilt that the Quilting Cat Pincushion is holding!
The quilt is hand stitched with various colored squares & has a cream cat in the center with an embroidered face & rhinestone eyes.
She's available in 2 different color choices
This is definitely one of my more sillier Fat Cat Pincushions styles: the Breading Cat!
The cat is shown with color options of black, brown, caramel, gray and orange. Though other colors are available upon request.
And the felt bread is also removable!
As much as I love making Fat Cats into pincushions, I do make other animals as well. For example this cute owl!
(Shown next to a traditional tomato pincushion for size reference)

About

The Story Behind the Fat Cats

I've always dreamed of making this a full-time career. Maybe one day I'll get there but for now my day job is at a library.

I posted my first pincushion cat up on Etsy in September of 2008: a basic black cat with a red collar. Though it took many months of experimenting before that with how I wanted them to look and figuring out the proper pattern. And over the last few years they’ve evolved -- a lot. They’ve gotten bigger and much more complicated. I never imagined that I would have taken on so many character styles. When I opened shop back in 2008, the only idea I had was the basic sitting cat.

Here's how it evolved:

About 8 years ago, I decided I wanted to learn to sew and make a Halloween costume. I sat in front of a sewing machine with the instruction booklet and attempted to sew a rather overzealous costume. It ended pathetically with me crying and my mom finishing it for me on the day of the party. Next Halloween I gave myself more time, though not necessarily an easier costume, but I did it. I sewed a costume by myself and I liked it! Liked the outcome of the costume and I liked sewing. I now had basic knowledge of a sewing machine and the creative possibilities were endless. (And I'll add that my costumes have gotten much better and it no longer ends with my crying in a corner.)

But to sew, you need a fun pincushion. And that's where Fat Cat Crafts comes into play. There at the time, I never thought that I was going to be selling them. I just wanted one for myself.

I've always just had the basic tomato pincushion. It works just fine, but I thought it was rather boring. The concept of pincushions actually came to me around the holiday season. I was making presents for my family, all gingerbread people items since I'm a gingerbread nut, and just in passing thought about how awesome it would be to have a fat gingerbread girl pincushion. After the hoopla and craziness of the holidays passed, I started really thinking about making pincushions and having a shop. And then I looked at my fat, furry black cat Spooky sitting and staring at me. I had an epiphany. Spooky was going to be the model for my fat cat pincushions.

And so in 2008, with the support of my family, Fat Cat Crafts was born. I will admit, the figuring out process was pretty painful. I had many failed attempts at patterns and shapes. And me being the weirdo that I am, I kept them all. I have all my miserable cat blob pincushion in a box. And then one night, I finally did it: I figured out the exact shape that I wanted. And I have a picture, somewhere, of me proudly displaying my first successful pincushion cat. I posted my first pincushion cat up on Etsy in September, 2008. I also went to my first craft fair a month later. Fat Cat was up and running!

For about 2 years I did both online and craft fairs, but I felt that I never was able to give full attention to one venue. I decided to focus just with online and stop going to fairs as a vendor. But I still attend as a buyer!

There's been lots of trial and error along the way. And I'll admit I've had my share of disastrous prototype pincushion characters. And unfortunately one major down. I was diagnosed with Lupus in the summer of 2011 which forced me to close up shop for a few months until I got things back under control. And after I finally was able to open up again, I had to taking sewing very slowly. I have no intention on making this a major part of the story, but I felt that I should share it with you. I did think at one point that I was going to have to shut down my shop for good. But this story has a happy ending and I didn't have to go that far. I still have to pace myself and be smart about taking care of myself. So I just take one day at a time and am extremely grateful that I am still sewing. Even if it is slower.

And I'm so proud to say Fat Cat Crafts has hit 200 Etsy sales in May of 2012! Which was a huge milestone for me! I ended 2014 nearing 1000 sales so I can happily say Fat Cats is steadily, if not quickly, growing.

I have no plans of stopping and a whole notebook full of ideas just waiting to be made.

And if you've made it through this entire page of rambling, I thank and applaud you! I tend to get excited when I talk about Fat Cats and my sewing adventures. I hope you found my story enjoyable and that my pincushions bring a smile to your face.

I have a blog where I post about crafting, costumes and my love of coffee. Feel free to follow my adventures:

Welcome to Fat Cat Crafts: home of the functional and fun pincushion cats! My name is Kathleen and I'm the creator of these tubby pincushions. Their round shape makes them the perfect sewing accessory with plenty of space for needles & pins. Their quirky appearance makes for great conversation pieces. These are not your everyday ordinary pincushions. These pincushions truly have personality & functionality to boot!

In this shop you'll find whimsical, and completely functional, pincushions for sewers or decorative pieces for the non-sewers. Pick your favorite profession, activity, historical period costume, etc and I'll make it into a cat pincushion. And if you don't see a style that's perfect for you, just contact me with what attire you'd like your animal to be and I'll see what I can do for you.

All the items in my shop are handcrafted and made from my own patterns.

Please note, that since all my items are hand made, sizes may vary slightly. Some of the felt I purchase off the bolt and others I purchase in 9x12 inch sheets. Please know, that I put the same effort and care into every cat (or other creation) that I make.

Since I dye some of my pom poms, the color of the pom pom might not match perfectly to the felt used or the body. I try to match the colors as closely as possible.

Unfortunately due to the rising or discontinuing of certain supplies that I use to create my items, my prices are subject to change. But if I quote you a price for a custom item and my prices go up before I finish your item, I will still price your item as the original quoted price.

Also, I do have 2 cats who may wander into my sewing room at some point. They are not allowed to go into the closet where my fabrics and supplies are stored though.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions or comments you may have.

Thanks!
