Welcome to Fat Hen Wild Wool, for lovely wool products made lower impact ,with care. I have a passion for wool, wool crafts and colour, and also a love of the Earth we live symbiotically with.
I have a few "ethics" that I keep within for my shop. The most important of these is BIODEGRADABILITY: All my products should decompose harmlessly into the environment from which they came. I use no synthetic materials or dyes, or poisonous chemicals as mordants.
I also aim to use local materials, trying for "down the road", but occasionally settling for made/grown in the UK. With blue and red dyes I am currently looking for somewhere to grow woad and madder, for now, I buy it in from a UK supplier, but not all of it is grown in the UK.
Any dyestuffs I harvest from the wild, I keep to the rule of "only decimate", ie I only take one tenth of whatever is growing. I am also respectful of any wildlife (including insects!) that maybe using the plants and avoid them.

Additional policies and FAQs
All dyes fade! Some plant dyes may change shade over prolonged periods, but I would expect all that I am selling here to last for at least a year. In my own experiments, all the dyes have lasted for at least 2 years. If you want your colours to last: Never wash them with concentrated harsh chemicals and washing powders. Never wash them in a higher temperature water than luke warm. Kepp them out of intense sunlight.
Occasionally the rinse water may be slightly coloured on first rinse: this should be due to small particles of dyestuff, rather than the dye itself rinsing out. This is okay! If your colours fade massively, and quickly, that's not okay, and you're due a refund: Contact me!
