About

The heart of India...to your doorstep

Travel has always been important to me. I knew when I was a child, watching as my father spun my big globe of the world, that I was going to travel.

Twenty five years ago I greeted India for the first time, and she received me as an old friend.

The colors and textures, the heat and the dust, the light and the shadows all seemed like memories already and I knew the land was going be a bright thread running through the tapestry of my life.

India's vintage textiles are extra-special.

Hand made vintage goodness in an age of fast food commercialism, the things that I offer were never intended for the market.

Kantha quilts have been made for hundreds of years, and they were born of need, lovingly stitched by mothers to keep their children warm, comprised of their old sarees, pierced, layered and stitched together with love and care. I also offer other beautiful vintage Asian textiles from time to time, when I find something lovely I want to share.

Please note that the quilts that I offer are not the usual skinny pieces with loose threads! most of my pieces (I still do have some of the thinner ones from my old stock) are thick, 'quilty' spongy and nicely finished. I carefully search out these very best quality vintage pieces so you can experience the Fatlama difference. If you don't agree - you get the purchase price back with no quibbles!

The kanthas I supply can be very old -the newest ones are around 30 years old, and some are up to 50-60 years old! therefore you do often see that time has rubbed top layer away. Because the pieces I buy are multilayered, this is not usually a problem, and in fact, does give a very pretty, time worn patina which I think you will agree is rather charming. I will always point out any flaw that I think may affect the integrity of a piece - and you can return a piece, for any reason, for up to 14 days :) Buy with confidence!

I am proud to make it my business to visit the small villages in Rajasthan where these textiles have been made for hundreds of years, searching for pieces that have survived the years well and have that certain extra something about them, for old is not always gold and there is a lot of weary old stuff out there. My job is sort the wheat from the chaff, and to offer the very best of Indias vintage textile heritage to the Etsy community.

*NEWSFLASH* I have recently added a range of stunning Bolivian Aymara blankets to Fatlama! these blankets represent the last vestige of traditional weaving in the Andes mountains and are incredibly beautiful with their mixture of vibrant brights and neutrals that seem to work every time. These pieces are mostly circa mid 20th century, and beautifully preserved. Do check them out under 'Bolivian Blankets' in the shop :)
