Going to med school? Nope! Making wreaths instead!!!

I started college thinking that I was going to med school (Biology major). Instead i started my small business making my own line of soy products, including soy lotions and candles, and grew the business to include floral design, shabby chic furniture, hand-knit items and a garden center. I ADORE my business and do my best to "shop small" with other small businesses as often as I can and encourage others to do the same.

I don't think that people realize how tough it can be owning your own small business. Everyone has an opinion on how things should be done, everyone is a critic. One day this year I was setting up for a garden show after, 1) the day before the show the neighborhood in which my store is located flooded (badly), 2) the day that I was actually setting up for the show it was snowing, and 3) the day that the show opened all of the plants had frozen overnight so there was nothing that "looked good" to sell. (Try to sell a frozen plant that looks like wilted lettuce at a high-end garden show and see how well that goes... then do it for 10 hours straight and be required to show up the next day for the same bit over again. Not as much fun as it sounds.) This is one instance of many- and I wasn't the only one trying to sell my frozen wares... there were many small business owners in the same proverbial boat (although we about needed a real one).

Owning a small business is tough. You need a thick skin and a sense of resolve for success that goes to your core. The glass is always half full, even when the bank account says there are only drops in the bottom. I have a bit of advice. First, for other small business owners: success and failure (for better or worse) is on your shoulders. Owning a small business is not a 9 to 5 job- it a 24/7 commitment that is ALWAYS with you. The short term can be rough, but the long term is truly rewarding, as you see the seeds of labor turn into a garden of success. Second, for people shopping with small businesses: we love your patronage, and can not succeed without great and loyal customers... those that tell their friends and are as excited about handmade products as you want a customer to be. Please be patient with us, too. Every so often a one-man-band needs a breather.

So shop with small businesses! Know that your money goes straight into the business of someone living their dream, supporting a local economy, and facing business challenges on a daily basis that you may never realize. Because the smile on the face of a small business owner hides all of the worry, the long nights and tiring days of sales, and just says "Welcome, come see what I have to offer".
