About

MAKERS GONNA MAKE!

Founded in 2014, Featherfin Yarn grew from a way to finance my creativity to a real business. Providing inspiration and materials for modern DIY'ers, lovers of traditional fiber crafts and explorers self-made fashion.

WHY HAND DYED YARN?

You choose hand dyed yarn, because you love to work with something that has a history, a person behind every piece, crafting with passion, and the unpredictability of every skein being different on its own.

With Featherfin Yarn you get really soft yarns out of amazing materials. The colors represent myself as dyer and as a person: intense without being loud, soft with many facets, unique and proud of it. My yarns are meant to perfectly blend with and enhance your wardrobe.

In this Etsy shop you can choose between ready-made yarn skeins, updated in themed collections, or dyed on demand yarn.

MY EXPERIENCES

Since 2014 I have been experimenting with yarn dyeing, gaining insights and experiences on
- how to prepare different materials for dyeing
- what effects the particular fiber has on the color's hue and
- the conditions to bond the individual pigments to the wool permanently.

2017, I graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and I use my knowledge to further enhance my products. I put a lot of effort in pigment research, seeing to it that the pigments are non-polluting and absolutely safe to be worn on the skin (other than with most commercial clothing).

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS

I am sourcing my yarns from different yarn mills, choosing only the softest, most versatile yarn bases.

The dyeing takes place in my 9 square meter home studio. Which is my proud an joy, considering I started out with a couple of pots on my kitchen stove.

I can dye up to four skeins in one pan. For orders/updates bigger than that, I split the dye solution evenly between multiple pans, to archive consistent coloring.

Then, I quickly rinse the yarn in lightly soaped water, using an organic wool detergent by Frosch®. I always let my yarns dry at their natural pace.

WHO IS THE PERSON BEHIND ALL THIS?

I am a creative solopreneur by passion! But my journey didn't lead me here directly.

After studying chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt, I made a bold step: I chose to build my own business!

My heart was beating for my growing hand dyed yarn label that I build up from nothing. Knowing that I could give something new to the growing modern DIY generation, I began to set up a place where you can get super high quality materials, inspiration and advice; anytime, anywhere.

I have still a long way to go to and improving what I can offer you has become the greatest fun of my life!

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

The Merino fibers in the yarn bases Super Sock, Soft & Silky and Cashmerino are superwash treated. You can wash this yarn with a gentle setting at 40 degrees Celsius in a washing machine.

The other yarn bases are hand wash only. My personal advice would be to wash your hand dyed natural fiber garments only when really stained.

Fine fibers regenerate themselves and you can keep them fresh with an occasional spritz of clear alcohol (I use vodka in an old perfume flacon). This will kill most odor producing bacteria and preserve your precious work.

Custom and personalized orders

Yarns that can be dyed on order are marked as PREORDERs. These colors will be dyed together, for you personally.

This procedure could take 5-10 working days, depending on the current workload of my dyeing studio and the weather conditions, as I mostly dry my yarns outside.

Preorders can only be cancelled in the first 12h of ordering, as I have to start the yarn pretreatment on the evening before dyeing.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Featherfin Yarn will be shipped in boxes, to spare them any additional agitation due to the transport. I also prefer to not seal them in plastic, as I think the smell compromises the quality of the yarn. If I use shipping bags for the outside packaging, they are bio-degradable.

I plan to offer gift wrapping in the near future!

Wholesale availability

Wholesale starts at 5 kg orders, but you can mix bases and colors. Please contact me for the wholesale price list.

Yarn Origins

My suppliers strictly source their materials from legal factories worldwide, for example Australia, Mongolia and Austria.

The cashmere content in the Cashmerino and Tencel Lace base is original Mongolian Cashmere.

Tencel is a regenerative plant fiber made from bamboo, produced by Lyocell in Austria.

The merino fibers in my yarn bases Super Sock, Soft & Silky and Cashmerino come from Australia, the land of high quality merino fleeces.

The raw yarns for the Super Sock and Soft & Silky lines are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified and mulesing free!

Dye Details

To dye animal fibers (including silk), I use professional acid dyes. These pigments bond permanently with protein fibers, but will leave plant fibers untouched.

I use OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified dyes, which means they do not contain heavy metals, azo-components or formaldehydes.

For baby garments, I recommend the combination with the also OEKO-TEX certified yarn bases: Super Sock and Soft & Silky.

Why is the production time for preorders so high?

Because I want to reduce my energy consumption, I always let the yarns dry on their own. The shipping times for preorders mostly reflect this time period, since the yarn has to be completely dry before I can label and package it.

Shipping Options

Standart domestic shipping is insured up to 500 Euro and includes a tracking number from DHL.

Standard international shipping is not insured or trackable! You can upgrade with the "Tracking" option at checkout for 2,50 Euro.

Then I will add a tracking number by Deutsche Post and the package is insured for damage or loss for min. 30 SZR.

Not all countries support the tracking over borders. For a list of countries that do, please contact me.
