Shop policies

Thanks for visiting feltbyfern! Please read through the policy information below before you place your order. Thanks!

My name is Fern and I am a working on my new Etsy shop part-time, but with full-time passion. Everything in my shop is designed and handmade by me in my lil workspace at home.

Crafting has been my creative outlet for years, but I really fell in love with sewing a couple years back. I prefer to create my own patterns and everything you find in my shop is an original design. Durability and functionality are two aspects that are important to me when designing new items.

Natural and recycled fabrics are what I am most inspired by at the moment. The soft wool needle-felted designs compliment these fabrics so well, and embroidery is added for simple, special touches. It takes some time, but I love the final look.

I hope to bring you new items regularly, so please visit again soon!

Additional policies and FAQs
My purchase is a gift. Can you make it look special?

Of course! I try to keep packaging to a minimum to tread a little lighter on the earth, but have an assortment of wonderful hand-made papers (not by me, by professionals) and ribbons for gift purchases.

Also, if you are purchasing one of the journal accessories, there is an option to include a Moleskin Journal (lined or blank) for an addition fee (covering the price of the book). Please note that because of the additional weight, the shipping charge will increase (double or triple for international orders) as well.

If there are any special requests, please convo me so that we can arrange things just the way you like!

What is needle-felting?

Needle-felting is a process where wool fibres (a.k.a. roving or sliver) is repeatedly stabbed with a barbed needle, tangling and binding the wool fibres into a 3-D form. Visit our facebook Fan Page to view photos of the process (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Felt-by-Fern/121101387947590).

Is the needle-felting durable?

During needle-felting, wool fibres are pulled through the wool fabric, locking the design onto the face of your item. The resulting 3-D design is well-bound and secure. The fibres felt further when rubbed or wetted, but I would not recommend pulling at the designs. They are locked in place so well that pulling hard on the felted design may actually rip the fabric. I currently have a needle-felted camera case that has travelled with me daily for the past two years and still looks great!

Where do you get your fabric?

I purchase new and second-hand material. All fabric is machine washed, ripped apart and ironed out. All items are made in a smoke-free, animal-free environment.

How can I care for my item?

Wash with a damp cloth and dry flat. Occasionally stray fibres may poke out of the felted design. These can be snipped off with a sharp pair of scissors – they are difficult to pull out.
