About

A little bit about FeltersJourney..

Hi, I’m Deborah Allen.. the maker and designer (and everything else-er) behind FeltersJourney. I am based in the West Midlands, UK. I work from home, my studio doubles as the family dining room from time to time :) my humungous work table is excellent for dinner parties - when I can bring myself to pack all of my goodies away. Don't worry fibre and food are never in there at the same time.

I spend my days doing what I LOVE! Designing and making unique felted art pieces, while looking out at the woods, fields and hills around our home. And taking time out to explore them with my family or just me and the dogs.

I am passionate about using natural materials and traditional techniques; this gives me a very deep, peaceful feeling.. it soothes my soul. Very occasionally I may add a little synthetic Firestar for sparkle or an upcycled button or 3 but they are always clearly mentioned in the listings. Otherwise it’s natural materials all the way; wool fibres, alpaca fibre, leather, wood and sometimes copper or silver. Most of my stuff is made using traditional wet felting techniques using no power other than that provided by my arms and back, though I do also use modern techniques such as nuno (incorporating sheer fabrics into felt) and occasionally needle felting some detail or design.

My inspiration often comes from ancient art / artefacts, mythology and folklore, the natural world - weather, flora and fauna, beautiful places, and my families shared experiences.

I am a perfectionist. If I am not 100% happy with something it doesn't go in my shop, no matter how many other people may tell me it is lovely and fine to sell.. I usually keep and use these cast-aways myself, otherwise they go in my recycle bag.

An element which keeps wet felting exciting is that even though I will plan a project; judging how much shrinkage will occur and how the different fibres will interact with each other, there is always an element of chance involved in felt making.. just a few more rolls this way, a little more rubbing there, less or more heat - all have their own say in how a piece will turn out. It often feels like felt has a life force of its' own.. it certainly has a wonderful energy.

I always buy top quality materials! I try to source them as close to home as possible, and am very excited that I shall soon have the fleeces from my sister-in-laws herd of alpaca to play with. From time to time I dye fibres / fabrics at home. I often blend fibres on my Jumbo Classic Drum Carder, either for felting or for spinning. I enjoy spinning fancy art yarns on my little old Ashford Traveller spinning wheel or sometimes my drop spindle and incorporating them into my felt.

Even though every aspect of FeltersJourney is my responsibility, from designing and making to; photography, packing and posting, sourcing supplies, marketing, monitoring statistics and tax returns.. and probably more that I can’t think of at the moment :) I have the support of a wonderful family. My lovely husband (who has the patience of a saint putting up with all of my fluff n fibre) and our 2 wonderful children, they all chip in with ideas and suggestions and moral support if something gets me down.

In the spring of 2012 I finally took the plunge! I quit my part time job working at a local museum to focus on felting and building up my business. I have not looked back! Every night I lie in bed thinking and planning tomorrows work. Once the family is out at school or work the day opens out in front of me, whether I am designing, experimenting with a new material or technique, or felting .. it is so exciting to be here, now, doing what I love and working for myself from home.

I first discovered a love of wet felting about 9 years ago, becoming more and more obsessed with it, felting when and wherever possible;learning and pushing myself. In spring 2012 I took the plunge going full time felting and running my Etsy shop.
