About

Fiddleheart Fine Wands is dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted wands that are both powerful tools for magic and unique works of art.

Origin Story:

Chapter 1:
My husband Doug and I (Kirstin) drive across the United States in a U-haul truck, with a tape cassette player and the audio book version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. We swoon at Jim Dale’s genius reading of this captivating story and are hooked. We refuse to let anyone but Jim tell us the story of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s adventures.

Chapter 2:
Many years later, Doug and I give birth to our 1st daughter. Many more years later, she turns 9 and devours the Harry Potter series. Once consumed in book form, our daughter listens to the audio books with her younger sister. These books become the soundtrack to our lives. More swooning over Jim Dale’s reading ensues and our love for the Wizarding World is rekindled.

Chapter 3: A few years later, I casually suggest that my daughter and I experiment with a home-school inspired project that involves some depth, breadth, creativity and commitment. We decide to design a wizard-themed summer school inspired by the Harry Potter series.

Chapter 4: To my delighted and dazed amazement, the whole family ~ my hubby and two daughters~ plus a slew of extremely talented teachers, artists and magical folk, open the doors to Fiddleheart Academy of Witchcraft & Wizardry. It is wildly successful~ and quite magical. Headmistress Hobbliknob ~that’s me~ also happens to be an expert wandmaker. Every student and professor ~ over 60 witches and wizards in all ~ receives a unique handmade wand to be used and cherished.

Chapter 5: How do we make all these wands and how? Along with Doug, I solicit my dear friend and brilliant artist, Ashley Dumas, to join us in our wand-making endeavor. We confide in each other that we LOVE making wands…. I mean who can resists turning an ordinary stick into a powerful magical object?

Chapter 6: Wandmakers Dumas and Hobbliknob start to receive requests from friends, family and neighbors for wands. “Those are gorgeous! Can you make me one?” And what does every good witch say to that? “Of course!” Fiddleheart Fine Wands is born!

Our methods:

Fiddleheart Fine Wands are made in the Sacred Places Wandmaking Tradition. This differs from the Europeon Wandmaking Tradition which has been made so famous by the Harry Potter stories.

Our wands differ in 3 essential ways:

1) Our wand wood is not harvested from live trees inhabited by bowtruckles nor is it bought by wood suppliers (unless rare, non-local wood is requested for commissioned wands). In this tradition, wand wood is found in various sacred places around the world and the trees themselves offer the wood by dropping an appropriate branch or sometimes an entire limb to the wand maker. We forage the wand wood for Fiddleheart Fine Wands primarily from the forested areas that boarder the Delaware River Valley. Unless, noted otherwise, no trees are harmed in the making of our wands.

2) Wands are powered not by cores, which we believe can make the wand prone to breakage, but by polished wand stones. Each wand has at least 1 wand stone and can have up to 10. The number of stones does not indicate the power of the wand. More stones can point to a more creative wand but it may also mean that the wand can be wily and not always do your bidding!

3) Wand stones are fused to the wand wood using the extrememly durable two-part clay found in the caves of the Dut Dut. (Non-magical folk can get their hands on this stuff by purchasing Apoxy Sculpt though they have no idea how to activate its magical properties). If you are unfamiliar with the magical creature known as the Dut Dut, we encourage you to ask a magical creature expert.

Much more goes into making Fiddleheart Fine Wands and if you are interested perhaps you should consider taking Beginning Wand Making with Headmistress Hobbliknob. Check out Fiddleheart Academy’s website: www.fiddleheartmagic.com

Suffice it to say, that each wand has been made by the caring and skillful hands of expert wandmakers. With hours of love and labor, we listen to exactly what each piece of wand wood wants in order to bring forth its most true and powerful magic abilities. The original character of the wood is always maintained and each wand is hand collected, whittled, sanded, stained and sealed. They are then embellished with polished wand stones, hand-modeled clay and fairy-dust enhanced paint.

Each wand is unique and can never be replicated exactly. No one has a wand exactly like yours when you buy from Fiddleheart Fine Wands.

We do accept requests and commissions.

Do you have a patronus that you would like to see shining upon your wand? We can do that. Do you have a special color scheme that you would like to see reflected in your wand design? We can do that. You just have to ask us.
