About the Artist: Cara Stein

When I started out on Etsy, I was completely obsessed with yarn. Over the years, my passions have shifted. Currently, my main focus is on coloring books and other things to color.

How did I get into coloring? I always loved coloring as a kid–and I always wanted ALL the colors. I’m not sure when or why I stopped, but in early 2015, I saw an interview with Johanna Basford about the beautiful coloring books she was designing for adults. I had just lost someone very dear to me and was deep in grief and mourning. The idea of coloring pretty pictures of gardens and woods was the first thing that held any appeal for me at all, so I decided to order her book. But when I looked for it on Amazon, it was sold out–and so were all the other adult coloring books.

At the time, I had been working as freelancer, editing and designing books for my clients and helping them self-publish. I thought, “well, I know how to make a book, and I want something to color right now. Maybe I’ll design a coloring book.” So I did.

Designing Relax and Color was such an inspiring project, it brought me back to life. And once I finished it, coloring the pages continued healing me.

I’m always excited when I get a new coloring book or a new set of gel pens. (I still want ALL the colors–especially the sparkly ones!) Others seem to feel the same, and I love feeding that delight by designing new books and greeting cards for everyone.

I believe that many people have a deep-seated drive to create, but very few of us actually exercise it. The great thing about coloring is that you don’t have to be “good enough” or “talented” or “a real artist.” Anyone can color, even little kids. And once you get started, it opens up a whole new world where you get to make beauty, and it doesn’t matter if you mess up. I love sharing that with people.
