About

Let me share a story with you of magic and wonder and ancient days passed...

Thank you for visiting my little corner in the aether. I make and do everything in my little shop, working from my rolling studio and home: a vintage Airstream trailer that I gutted and rebuilt from the frame up. A decade on the road has shaped me, changing how I look at all things. This nomadic sensibility is reflected in my Bohemian designs and choices of materials, both in their whimsical beauty and in comfort and durability.

Average jewelry is boring. I am a lover of rare and exotic materials, and enjoy bringing out their unique beauty through design. I also try to give life to objects that may otherwise go unused. I work with ethically sourced quality stones, recycled sterling silver, antique and contemporary ethnic beads, and cruelty-free feathers from my two parrots. I put my soul love, my "mana" into all I create to bring you something special with each piece. It is my sincerest hope that you find something that makes you smile.

I have always loved beads. Since 2010, I've been learning lost wax casting, TIG welding, and metal fabrication. I've had the pleasure to study jewelry arts at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Appalachian State University, and under private tutors.

All First Age Silver originals ship from a clean, smoke-free environment. I share my small home studio with two parrots. All finished jewelry is carefully cleaned and stored in sealed containers so that it will be immaculate when it is presented to you.

I live, work, and travel in an RV, so your purchase will ship from my present site within the continental USA. First Age Silver is registered in Pennsylvania, USA.

I believe in helping neighbors and small business, and source nearly all of my supplies from individuals rather than chain suppliers. My sterling silver, gold and copper jewelry is made with antique or ethically sourced recycled metals. I take great care in selecting the materials I use, and try to tread lightly on this small planet that we share.

A word about metals...

Quality jewelry metal is not magnetic! Iron, steel, and other ferrous alloys are magnetic. They will also rust. Lead is very soft and dull and likely you will only come across it in older costume jewelry. Pewter is soft and flexible and can not hold fine detail or a shine like silver. These materials and their alloys are known as BASE METALS or pot metal. They are often plated with gold, silver, antique brass or antique copper to appear more aesthetic and valuable.

BRASS, BRONZE, and COPPER are not as precious as gold or silver, but are strong and high quality jewelry metals. Solid brass, jeweler's bronze, and pure copper are terms used to designate these as good quality (as in, not a plated base metal) and suitable for jewelry use. "Raw" metals are not lacquered and will develop a natural patina over time.

GERMAN SILVER, NICKEL SILVER, WHITE METAL, and TIBETAN SILVER are alloys of nickel, brass and others, and contain little to no actual silver. They are only trade names to give the illusion of greater quality.

The American jewelry standard for silver is STERLING, which is 92.5% pure silver and marked .925. The remaining alloy is copper, which strengthens the piece.

FINE SILVER, or .999 is pure silver. It is softer and more pliable than sterling silver, and tends not to be used for delicate applications.

Plated metal, such as gold plate or SILVER PLATE, is a base metal electroplated with a very thin layer of silver or gold. It is of a lower quality than gold-filled or silver-filled material.

GOLD-FILLED or silver-filled metal is a core of brass with a layer of gold/silver rolled around it. This layer is heavy enough to not wear through with normal use.

VERMEIL is karat gold plated over sterling silver.

KARAT GOLD is any alloy of gold used for jewelry. The karat refers to the amount of gold in the alloy, with 24kt being the highest amount of gold you will find in modern jewelry applications, and 9kt being one of the lowest. For example, 14kt gold is sometimes hallmarked as .585, meaning 58.5% of the alloy is gold. Pure gold is very soft and will not hold a shape without a stronger metal bonded to it. The alloy metal can affect the color of the gold, for example rose gold is colored by high amounts of copper. Copper is often alloyed with gold, as is silver.

BEADING WIRE is flexible braided metal wire with a nylon coating. The standard is braided steel wire, sometimes plated with silver or 24kt gold. The best quality and flexibility come with a 49-strand wire for thicker gauges, and 19-strand wire for the finest. There are some thicker wires available that are solid sterling silver and these are the top of the line. Finer wires are only available in steel.
