how making art got me through a pandemic

2020 was a year of questions. How do communities show up for one another through times of deep pain and loss? Who are we when we cannot engage with the world in our usual ways? How do our priorities shift when we are asked to turn inward? As the world swayed and shifted, our routines evolved, our values were tested, and the ways in which we used our time were examined. I turned to oil pastels to channel my loneliness, my anger, my hope and my spirit. I then began to teach myself how to work with digital mediums. I found that tools like Illustrator and Procreate allowed me to be more unbridled, less afraid of mistakes, and allowed me play with new colors. Hours of podcasts, music, and movies were my companions on the path to what became Fish Makes Art, a place where I can share with you the art that has helped me process difficult moments, as well as dream of future possibility. I hope you enjoy!
