Video summary: In this video I share how to DIY a head shaping pillow for your baby. It's super easy and very forgiving!

Ancient traditional products from across the world for a healthy baby and mommy

Ten years ago, as a first time mom, I drove myself crazy, obsessively researching everything I would need for my baby - from car seats to VOC in paints. It was exhausting. But there was one product I knew I could blindly rely on - a pillow filled with mustard seeds. This ordinary looking pillow has been used in North India for millennia and prevents flat heads in babies.

Back then, I had no idea about Etsy.... so one afternoon, between nursing my newborn and trying to catch up on my sleep, I cut up an old garment and hand-stitched my very first mustard seed pillow. Though it was an ugly, misshapen thing, it got the job done.

During my second pregnancy, I saw a sewing machine at Costco and despite never having stitched in my life, I bought the machine. Then I spent the next couple of weeks Youtubing "how to sew" which led me down the rabbit hole of "how to thread your sewing machine" and "how to cut fabric" (thank you Youtube:)

Eventually, I could stitch a straight line and ended up making a baby pillow for my daughter. Though the love and attention that went into both pillows was the same, the second pillow was much more presentable.

I wondered if there were other moms with whom I could share this product and thats how I opened my Etsy store - FixAFlatBabyPillow. Although I started off with the intention of selling just baby pillows ,along the way, I added a few other items that I had used after giving birth and had benefited from like the bengkung belly bind used in Malaysia, as well as flaxseed packs that work great for a sore back or tired eyes - afflictions most new moms face at some point.

If you are an expectant mom or a new mom,I hope you will also benefit from the all natural alternates that my store offers. Wishing you and your baby health and happiness always!

Frequently asked questions
Why is a non-toxic nursery important for the health of your baby?

Given the amount of time your baby spends sleeping, the FixAFlatBabyPillow, made from one natural ingredient - mustard seeds - offers a non-toxic alternate to the head shaping pillows currently available.

Here is part of an interview with the co-founder of The Honest Company as to why this is important... "the air intake of a resting infant is twice that of an adult per pound of body weight...if that air is loaded with VOCs, that baby’s exposure is double that of an adult. Also, children’s bodies are growing and developing rapidly, so chemicals that can harm development can do maximum damage at this critical time."

What organizations do I support?

In gratitude for all that my family has been blessed with, I make a yearly donation to www.Ichafoundation.org

This is an organization in India started by Madhu, an amazing lady I have the good fortune of knowing. At the age of 55, she gave up her thriving business, sold her jewelry and apartment to adopt 15 children (and counting,) most of them with severe disabilities. She strives to provide these babies with the same love and standard of living that she provided her biological son with.I admire her courage and hope to support her in my own small way.

Do I offer an environmental conscious and zero waste option?

In my daily life and while making anything for sale, I try my best to not put anything into the trash that can be recycled...so every scrap of fabric is collected for recycling. FYI, H&M has a fabulous program where you can drop off unwanted, old, torn clothes( including scraps,) in exchange for a 15% off coupon!

When I buy something online and it comes in a huge box with tonnes of bubble wrap, brown paper, printed invoices etc. I am saddened by the amount of waste that purchase has generated.

So with my store I do not offer printed invoice and instructions, things that I make available online.

Please contact me if you want a plain packaging option wherein the item will be placed directly in a padded envelop - a safe, but plain choice.

Are items ready to ship? If not, how long does it take to make an order?

Most items are ready to ship. I usually drop off the package within 24 hours of receiving an order, unless it is a Sunday or the weather is bad:)
