About

I want to inspire you to live the way you want to live.

Nothing gives me more pleasure than making stuff. I create so much that I cannot possibly keep it all. I started my Etsy shop, Fixie’s Shelf, as a way of finding loving and appreciative homes for all the characters and ideas that pop out of my imagination. This has allowed to be able to focus on it full time.

Through the items on my shelf, I invite you to step into another world, one filled with quirky characters and a touch of magic. Read The Grimstones’ book series, which feature gothic marionettes and an upcycled assemblage world which I made myself. The Grimstones and I toured the world, performing on stages at major arts centres, before it was sandwiched between book pages.

I still love making dolls and assemblage boxes, and have recently learnt new papier mache techniques from Julie Arkell, which are finding their way into sweet and quirky figures on my shelf. I also paint the quaint people of my imagination, who always have beautiful, alluring faces and often a touch of darkness about them, too.

I am passionate about DIY, and you’ll find protests to consumer culture and mass-manufacturing in my work, as I believe this is the opposite of finding our inner creative pathway. Some of my pieces have a strongly urban, graffiti style. For me, graffiti is the authentic voice of protest, an image of beauty that is not about money. It’s proof of the DIY ethos of an individual who has not bowed down to the “experts”. I paint graffiti on reclaimed wood to bring inside, where the images can give us pause to think, and remind us how we really want to live.

My jewellery pieces are organic, rustic, and industrial, and whenever possible I use hardware, junk and scrap metal as the base. I started making jewellery because I wanted a chandelier. The perfect chandelier remained in my journal as a drawing for years, and eventually I signed up for a metal-smithing course so I would learn the skills to make it. The chandelier hangs above my bed now, and it’s made from vintage pewter cups, twisted forks, wrapped wire and crystals. It’s beautiful. And now, thanks the the course, I have a blow torch and metal-working skills, which I’ve put to use making jewellery. I love shrinking down the portraits of quirky girls I’ve painted, and housing them in vintage style pendants.

I minimise waste and resource use by choosing simple, versatile tools and scavenged materials. The imperfections of reclaimed objects become a part of the finished work. I further age them with layers of paint, often slashing and sanding them back to reveal vulnerabilities below.

On my shelf, I hope you’ll find inspiration. I want to inspire you and your children to live creatively, and live the way YOU want to live. You’ll find zines and artworks that will help nudge you towards your dreams, be they creative or otherwise. You’ll find a manifesto for living well outside of consumer culture, and vibrant, colourful artworks that serve as a daily affirmation for your choices.

I have a facebook page where I post about the things I’m making and other creative experiments. When I post new items on Facebook, they are often snapped up quickly. I make stuff so prolifically that my shelf doesn't have room for all the quirky characters and ideas that pop out of my imagination. I love painting portraits, stitching, metal-smithing, papier-mâché-ing, cutting stencils and carving rubber stamps.

Hello and welcome to Fixie's Shelf. Nothing gives me more pleasure than making stuff, and once it's made, I put it on my shelf to make it available to you. I am an individual artist working from home, and I do everything I can to minimise my impact on the environment and my involvement in the mass market.

While I do need to buy some essential supplies and tools new, I upcycle whenever possible, and often the wear and tear from old items brings an authenticity to the pieces I make. I source most of my fabrics and garments from thrift stores, and I paint on scavenged wood from my own neighbourhood.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
You are welcome to pay via Etsy direct checkout, paypal, or in cash if you pick up your item from my place in Northcote, Melbourne, Australia.

Pick ups are welcome - make an appointment by texting me on +61408787582. No voice calls please as I am deaf!

I also welcome layby / payment plans. Just contact me to let me know how many payments you would like to make, and what amount. I will ship your item when it's fully paid for.

For commissions, I will need payment in full before I schedule and start your work.
Shipping
I ship using Australia Post. Very occasionally a parcel goes astray - for this reason I recommend that you use the Registered Mail shipping upgrade, especially for items over $50. I cannot take responsibility for items lost in the mail - you will need to use your tracking number to address this with Australia Post.

Please be aware that I am only able to go to the post office once or twice a week, so if you choose Registered Mail it may take a few days longer for me to ship your item. Please contact me if it's urgent and I'll do my best to accommodate!

I do my best to ship within a few days of you placing your order, but sometimes this is impossible if I am away or don't have the right packaging on hand. If you need something urgently, contact me to check and I'll do my best to meet your requirements.

In line with my upcycling policy, most of my packaging and shipping materials are scavenged or sourced for free. Every piece is wrapped differently, and I do my best to add special touches so that it feels like a present. I love mail art and often do little collages onto the the parcels I send out. My packages usually arrive looking very interesting and appealing, so if you are buying secretly for someone in your household, be sure to tell me so I know to wrap it with boring packaging!

For commissions, I work on these one day a week. When you book a commission, I will put yours in the queue and complete it as soon as I can. I cannot always predict how long it will take as I don't know how long it will take me to complete the works ahead of yours in the queue. Let me know if you need it by a specific date and I'll do my best. Plenty of advance notice is wise for commissions.
Refunds and Exchanges
I will offer a refund if you are unsatisfied with your product - please return it to me at your own expense. If the item is damaged I am also happy to refund - just let me know what your issue is. I cannot refund/replace items lost in the mail - it is your responsibility to upgrade to Registered Mail.
Additional policies and FAQs
You are welcome to ask me for custom items. The more detail you can give me about what you want, the better. Have a look at other items available in my shop, or sold items (click on the 'sales' link in my side bar), and let me know that you'd like colours like this one, a style like that one etc. Please be aware that custom items will usually cost more than the original item you have used for reference. This is because:

- sometimes the original items are priced lower, to clear

- often my original items are made using items I have found or have on hand, and to create your custom order I may need to spend time sourcing specific items

- even a simple request like 'this painting with blond hair instead of red' can be trickier than you'd think, because if the blond hair is the same colour as the background and the red is essential to make the painting 'pop', then I need to rethink how to pull the piece together so it will work, and I may need to do some test paintings to make sure my ideas will come together.

When you make a custom order, please let me know when you need it by. Most custom orders I am able to create within a few weeks of the order being placed, but if you need something sooner, let me know and I can try to meet your needs. Ordering well in advance of your needs is great, because it gives me more time to source your materials and think about your piece before I make it. It well be all the better for the extra time, I promise!
