From cat hair to jewelry

The story about my jewelry made from cat hair begins innocently enough with the brushing of Gaia’s hair. I mean, I’ve had cats since I could walk and talk, so it wasn’t like I just discovered the joys of brushing overnight. Or, that I would discover a creative way to wear cat hair. What happened instead was a confluence of events: a new kitten with long, silky-soft fine hair and a fledging jewelry endeavor.

But cat hair jewelry? Well, it was Gaia’s fault that his hair was impossibly soft and if not groomed regularly, it matted. Luckily he liked to be brushed. One day a new comb produced mounds of fluffy white hair. I held the hair in my hand—no, it was not hair—it was a white, soft cloud. Impulsively I rolled the hair into a tight small ball using the palms of both my hands.

Being a kitten, Gaia also loved to play. So instinctively, since cats love balls, I threw it to him. He loved it! After that, every time I groomed him I made another ball.

Soon, balls accumulated everywhere. On a whim, I gathered some up and placed them in a bowl. As I admired this collection, which reminded me of lovely soft white pearls, I was inspired to make a necklace. How wonderful, I thought, to be reminded of my beautiful cat in the form of a personal adornment.

We became purrfect business partners—he supplied the hair, I made the product.

Yet the story doesn’t end here. Cat hair jewelry? I had no idea the controversy that would ensue. Literally overnight the cat was out of the bag! The internet was abuzz. People were shocked. I was called a bad cat mommy or a weird cat lady, or worse things, because I incorporated cat hair as one of my materials.

This viral chatter eventually led to features on cat related blogs as Catsparella and Modern Cat, and then even more: a feature on Animal Planet’s Must Love Cats, The Today Show, The Anderson Cooper Day Time Talk Show, NPR radio, Wired Magazine, and most recently VICE Magazine.
