Hand made Renaissance and Modern hats

I got started in Millinery when I tried to make my own riding hat for a Renaissance costume, and realized how difficult it was to follow the commercial patterns available, even with a background in theater costuming. I found some classes on felt and straw blocking locally and have been at it since. I'm currently using a lot of blocked buckram, but plan to start making felt and possibly straw tall hats.

I research the shapes of the Renaissance hats based on period art, paintings portraits etc. I try to use period techniques and materials whenever possible.

I also make lovely modern hats from blocked felt and straw. My favorite shapes are cloches and fedoras, but my wooden hat block collection keeps expanding.

More recently, I have started creating millinery flowers out of shaped silk. Each petal is cut from silk, hand dyed, and shaped with hot irons before assembly. It's a lot of work, but the flowers are gorgeous!

I do gather a lot of research on Pinterest, including Renaissance paintings, hats and fascinators.

I discovered Millinery in 2010 when I embarked on a mission to make a hat for my Renaissance costume. Since that time, I have learned to block buckram, felt and straw, cover buckram hat frames and make my own silk flowers.

I make Folie Jolie hats - crazy good-looking handmade Renaissance hats for Lords, Ladies, Wenches and Knaves. I have a small home-based studio, where I design, block, sew and embellish Renaissance era inspired hats, using traditional millinery techniques and tools. I make modern hats too, by request, cloches, sunhats and fedoras, but my main focus is Renaissance hats.

I am the sole owner and creator in this shop, I wear all of the hats (pardon the pun!). I do not employ assistants or outsource, though sometimes I get opinions on trim design from my fans on facebook! Every single order is created by hand by me so you can be assured that your item has had special attention to detail and hand made with care. Being handmade, each is different and some variation is to be expected due to the hand made nature of items offered.

Additional policies and FAQs
Please utilize the Etsy convo system to contact me. It is the easiest way for me to keep track of orders, order requests, and custom requests. All convos will be answered with 3 business days unless I am on vacation.

I have made every effort to display as accurately as possible the colors and images of my products that appear at the store. I cannot guarantee that your computer monitor’s display of any color will be accurate.
I reserve the right, but am not obligated, to limit the sales of my products or services to any person, geographic region or jurisdiction. I may exercise this right on a case-by-case basis. I reserve the right to limit the quantities of any products or services that I offer. All descriptions of products or product pricing are subject to change at anytime without notice, at the sole discretion of me. I reserve the right to discontinue any product at any time.

I do not sell untrimmed hats, as the design and trim is a big part of my work, and is how I am able to maintain my quality standards. Clients have the option of sending me trim materials and I can trim the hat per your spec, or I can do a very simple trim. I am happy to collaborate on trim, including photos of mock ups until we find something we are both delighted with.

Contact me if there is a problem or if you are dissatisfied, as I take feedback seriously and an opportunity to improve my products to my customers. If you have questions in regards to this, please ask BEFORE placing an order.
