About

Handspun Yarns Inspired by Nature

Here you will find handspun and hand dyed yarn made with sustainable materials and practices wherever possible. I buy most of my fibers from small family farms. I focus on farms that treat their animals humanely and don't use chemicals on the fleece. Many of my animal friendly fibers come from Homestead Wool and Gift Farm in Wisconsin (http://www.homesteadwoolandgiftfarm.com). They are are an animal sanctuary who never kill, give away, or breed their animals. I also use mill end fibers, which are leftovers from the factory that are too short to sell or got tangled in the machine. They would otherwise go to waste, and therefore are similar to recycled fibers.

Due to some ethical concerns regarding silk production, I only use recycled silk and silk by-products in my yarns. I enjoy including recycled sari silk in my handspun, and hope to incorporate other products such as pulled silk and throwster's silk waste in the future.

I try to avoid using synthetic fibers. Regenerated cellulose and protein fibers such as bamboo, ingeo, soy silk, milk protein, etc. have enjoyed a comeback in recent years, but I don't include them in my yarns due to the heavy chemical processing that is required to make them. Angelina glitz, crystal flash, and nylon firestar are the only synthetics I incorporate into my handspun. (I just love sparkle too much to avoid it!)

While all my yarns are wool-based, I am starting to experiment with plant fibers. You will find that I sometimes include hemp, flax, ramie, and organic cotton in my yarns. I would love to provide vegan/wool-free yarns sometime in the future.

I love working with fleece in it's natural state, as I generally believe that the original texture and colors are most beautiful. However, I also enjoy coloring wool in nature-inspired shades. I dye with either Greener Shades or natural dyes. Greener Shades are heavy metal free acid dyes that comply with the Organic Trade Association's standards for Organic Fiber Processing. (Read more at http://greenershades.stillrivermill.com/index.php) I dye yarn naturally using plants, bark, and even mushrooms that I harvest myself or else purchase from an ethical source. I only use non-toxic alum mordants for these dyes. I hope you like the stunning colors they create as much as I do!

I aim to use as little packaging as possible while keeping your product safe (and looking cute!) I use heavy duty polyethylene envelops that are highly resistant to water, punctures, and tears. They are made in the USA from 50% post-consumer plastics and are 100% recyclable.

I DO SHIP INTERNATIONALLY. Please send me a convo listing what items you would like to buy, and I will send you a shipping quote.
