Announcement   Gilmour Design is about simplicity and beauty … minimal modern design for everyday objects. My designs are inspired by the curves and forms of nature … simple beautiful nature.

I believe that every-day functional objects can, and should be, beautiful. Kitchen utensils, serving ware and home-wares have been hand-made to feel luxurious and look beautiful and, of course, be ultimately very functional. And, they are fully sealed to stay that way for a long time.

Design products from Gilmour Design are not mass produced ... they are hand-crafted one at a time ... by one person. Every item is created with care and attention from hand-picked beautiful materials also proven for their strength and suitability.

Every object from Gilmour Design is created with love as though it is for myself ... and, in fact, that is how it started. My name is Bob Gilmour. I am an Australian designer and product maker as well as sculptor. Check out my profile to learn how this all came to be.

My first Gilmour Design piece and what a great choice. Beautiful to look at, a pleasure to use, wonderful to hold. So nice to buy from the artisan and to receive the item so quickly. I know I have a quality piece of kitchen equipment that I will enjoy looking at as well as using.

My beautiful stirrer is now gracing my kitchen utensil jar. Curvaceous, yes, but also sensual as the smoothly crafted handle fits so elegantly into my hand. This is my second Gilmour Design piece and my jar is clamouring for more.

Ordered left handed for my husband.....and they are beautiful to view, extremely well balanced...almost to perfect to use! Have purchased in the past left handed items from large kitchen sites and they were crude, and basically ugly. They are without doubt exceptional quality and you can see that they are made not only with love but also with a true sense of design and useage . Bob was very easy to communicate with and we had some giggles along the way. Also very prompt in his responses. Regret I didn't google Gilmore Design years ago!!

About

My greatest value in life is the freedom to create the reality of my own choosing.

In the late 90's I was transitioning out of a career taking people gamefishing to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. After 16 years I was searching for something a little more creative and a little less enviro-socially sensitive. At the same time, a strong urge to re-visit the creative roots of my childhood was growing day by day.

Turn the clock back a bit ... as a kid, I had followed all sorts of artistic pursuits - drawing, painting, music - and I was constantly making stuff out of wood and all sorts of found objects. I had a healthy fascination for detail and in pre-teen naivety, I never let reality get in the way of wonky 3-legged tables.

We all grow up and those early years fade into the rigours of facing up to life's requirements. Seven or eight years at university began to feel like the chains of normalcy were tightening around my ankles ... so I went fishing for 16 years.

Then it happened. I realised I was getting tired of being at sea a couple hundred days a year and decided on a tree change. More importantly, I started making stuff for around the house ... furniture, picture frames, garden items ... and kitchen utensils. I was doing a lot of cooking at the time and the decision to make my own utensils was totally intuitive.

I had inspiration to create a cooking stirrer ... which is now the "Classic Stirrer" ... motivated by a desire for simple minimalist design which could do all the things I thought it should be able to do. I made a rough prototype and began using it right away. Initially, I had no intention of selling them ... it was purely a personal thing ... and ended up giving a reasonable number away to friends.

As these things often go, I started doing a local craft market, selling handmade utensils and other objects and found a receptive audience. My work expanded to include fine display pieces and sculpture ... at last, getting to those creative roots.

I create sculptural organically inspired homewares - utensils, muddlers, bowls, platters - and artistic works and sculpture for display. My primary media are wood and resin. Curvaceous simplicity ... minimalism ... is the underlying theme of my work.

Gilmour Design is a small one-person design and making venture based in Far North Queensland, Australia. It has evolved from a driving force to live a creative life and to share hand-crafted beautiful objects with others.

Every item emanating from the Gilmour Design studio is made with utmost attention to detail and with the highest level of quality.

Gilmour Design is in its 15th year of operation (as of 2016) and has a global customer base. The business sells locally in Australia in a major artisans market (Port Douglas) every Sunday where face-to-face engagement with customers is a crucial and valuable aspect of success ... as well as online. Furthermore, Gilmour Design is a proud supplier of diplomatic and parliamentary gift-ware to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet of the Australian Federal Government.

Great communication with customers ... both in person and online ... is considered vital and is a key stone for success.

Gilmour Design delivers products which are either true one-offs ... single items that cannot be replicated ... and also ranges of "unique" stock items ... products like utensils that conform to a set design, but are made one at a time so each individual item is slightly different to the next.

On Etsy, most products listed will be considered as "in stock" unless designated "made to order". Sometimes though, things get a little out of kilter and a product may get made specifically to fill an order. Generally for items like utensils and home-wares, a "made to order" substitution will have no effect on the delivery schedule ... and, at all times, the buyer will be kept in the loop via Convo.

Gilmour Design has been open on Etsy since 2008 ... initially with the name Forest Treasures. The shop has moved into its new identity as Gilmour Design to reflect the current direction of the underlying business.

Thank you for visiting Gilmour Design and I sincerely hope to share my fine work with you soon.

Payment
All payments for Gilmour Design on Etsy are conducted through Etsy's secure payment system. The accepted options for this shop are PayPal and credit card direct. Gilmour Design also accepts Etsy gift cards.

Orders for standard listings may be canceled if necessary prior to actual shipping. In the case of custom orders, cancellation may be possible by negotiation if the item is deemed to be re-sellable (either on Etsy, physically or via other online venues) by the seller. Generally this is possible unless there is personalisation involved such as laser engraving. For specific answers to any cancellation enquiry, please Convo Gilmour Design.

In the event of order cancellation, full refund is provided through Etsy's standard refund process.

No payments, cancellations or refunds from Etsy-listed items are conducted by any method outside of the Etsy's standard secure transaction system.
Shipping
Gilmour Design has been shipping work all around the world for 15 years ... both as a result of online sales and for face-to-face customers. Shipped items range from single cooking utensils to fine centrepiece bowl forms valued at several thousand dollars.

Australia Post is the preferred shipping vehicle and has been found to be extremely reliable and secure. Item tracking is generally available for all purchases. The standard services available for Etsy purchases are Domestic (in Australia) Road Shipping (with tracking) - generally 5 to 6 days max - and International Airmail to most countries (with tracking) - usually around 10 days to UK, USA and Europe.

Other Australia Post shipping service options such as Express Post (Australia) and item insurance are available by negotiation (please Convo before purchasing) ... simply requiring a modified one-off listing to reflect extra postage costs for such services.

Purchased items are generally shipped out before the expected shipping date and all effort is made to ensure that parcels travel in a timely manner. If something arises that might cause a delay in shipping, the buyer will always be notified by Etsy Convo.

Purchased items are securely and strongly packed in purpose-made packaging. All items generally ship boxed ... with boxes custom-made from recycled heavyweight cardboard. Products are brown paper wrapped and bubbled before boxing. Boxes are carefully made to "fit" the enclosed items so no movement of the product can occur during shipping and reinforced and padded according to the size of the item.

Buyers should be aware that import customs duties and taxes are their responsibility. Gilmour Design does not ship any prohibited items to any country and Customs Declarations reflect the true nature of the item and value.

In 15 years of shipping handmade objects and artworks around the world, Gilmour Design has never been notified of any item for damage or loss. Buyers can have faith that every effort is made to ensure the safety of their purchased item and that it will arrive at their destination in a timely manner as expected.
Refunds and Exchanges
We all experience a bit of "buyers remorse" sometimes or receive an item which isn't what we thought it was going to be ... the former is just another trait of being human while the latter is one of the inescapable quirks of purchasing online. Sometimes also, mix-ups in shipping labels occur and an item intended for someone else might turn up. Whilst sometimes inconvenient, such incidents can generally be dealt with via communication.

If a buyer receives an item that he or she is not happy with on the basis of quality or function, the person should make contact via Etsy Convo with Gilmour Design immediately to initiate communication. The situation can generally be rectified with a return/refund or a return and product exchange. In these cases, the cost of return shipping is the responsibility of the buyer although Gilmour Design will usually cover the shipping cost to send another item.

If the buyer receives the wrong item, Gilmour Design covers all refund/shipping/exchange costs. In that event, please initiate a Convo via Etsy straight away.

Refunds for custom made items are based on several criteria. During the planning and creation stages, the buyer will receive images of the item for approval before shipping. If the item ships and the buyer is unhappy, a communication process with the seller should be initiated via Etsy Convo. A refund less shipping cost or partial refund less shipping and agreed-upon development fee may be made at the discretion of the seller if the item is deemed to be "re-sellable" at any selling venue. No refunds will generally be available for personalised items which have been laser engraved or otherwise bear features deemed to render them un-sellable in general. As usual, in this sort of case, please communicate with Gilmour Design ... I'm sure we can reach an amicable solution.

In all cases, requests for refund / return / exchange need to be be made within 14 days of receiving an item. Additionally, items to be returned need to be in Unused and Re-sellable condition. All refunds ... either full or partial ... are handled via Etsy's standard refund policy. If additional refund is required (eg. extra postal charges to return wrongly-shipped items), the funds may be forwarded direct to the buyer via PayPal.

Customer satisfaction is of paramount importance and every effort is made to arrive at a satisfactory outcome for the purchaser. Communication with Gilmour Design should be a top priority in any event that the buyer is dissatisfied with any aspect of the purchasing experience.
