Additional policies and FAQs
I enjoy knives, owning them, making them, remaking them, giving them to friends and family. Because my knife making began out of this I have a fairly specific style and purpose for the tools I make. I prefer knives that are strong, simple and durable enough to be used everyday. This is because I use the knives I make, everyday. Many of the knives I will sell I have carried and used for weeks before cleaning them up for sale. This is partially to test them, and partially because sometimes I like enough that I don't quite want to say goodbye to it right away
--All my knives start with high carbon or tool steels. my favorites being 1084, 1095 and O1 tool steel. I use these because Their chemical compositions lend them well to the type of small scale production my shop represents. These steels also offer a good balance of durability and edge retention.
--steel sources: I purchase most of my steel from aldo bruno. He is known i amoung small time knife makers for his high quality steels, especially his 1084 steel. .
--I use a propane fired forge for both forging and heat treatment
--the only power tool that I use is a small belt sander to finish up my blades and handles
--I use reclaimed wood whenever possible; i try my best to identify the type of wood when I can but due to the nature of the reclaimed wood I have access too ( mostly old barn woods) I am reluctant to label the type for fear of giving incorrect information. Due to this, often my reclaimed wood handles are just labeled as "reclaimed wood"
--wood handles are oil sealed and burnished prior to sale to give a good grip and hard smooth surface.
--currently we have red oak, black walnut, reclaimed white oak that has a wonderful gray hue to it and reclaimed barnwood maple.
--custom orders are welcome, please contact me with what you would like and we can figure out how to make it happen---
-delivery times for custom orders are estimations (usually i will have your knife done much faster than the time frame quoted. i work in a covered outdoor space and am at the whims of extreme weather.
