Utilitarian bags with a pretty face

Eight years ago I graduated from art school without ever feeling comfortable with the term 'artist.' I worked odd jobs in upstate New York to save money to visit my then-boyfriend in Holland. After a few years of back-and-forth and various career paths, I rediscovered my love for sewing and fashion. And there was only one item I wanted to focus that love on: the bag.

My first sales were made at the busy farmers markets in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. I was thrown in the deep end - selling at three markets a week and sewing new bags into the wee hours of the morning. It took a while to gain the confidence to start my own business, but once I found out it could be a way to gain residency abroad it seemed like fate.

Over the years my skills have improved and my style has evolved. However, my mission stayed the same: to combine original design and hidden function into what I think is the ultimate accessory. It's a constant, exciting challenge to design a bag that looks chique but is useful and simple at the same time.

I designed each item with function in mind, paying attention to current styles while keeping my wares classic enough to be trend-proof. All of my items are limited edition or one-of-a-kind.

+ What forms of payment are accepted?

I currently accept Paypal and Bank Transfer** at my Etsy store. However, you don't need a Paypal account to pay that way, just a credit card. When checking out with Paypal you can select the "Don't have a Paypal account?" option to pay with any major credit card.
All payments must be made within 3 days / 72 hours of purchase.

** If you live in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, or Germany and have a bank account there, you may also do a bank transfer. All other countries must choose Paypal.

+ Kan ik per bankgiro betalen?

Ja! Als je met een Nederlandse bankrekening wil betalen, stuur me een bericht (frankandgertrude (at) gmail (punt) com) en dan stuur ik je Frank & Gertrude’s rekening info.

+ Can I cancel my order?

Once placed, an order cannot be canceled, so please ask any questions you may have about a product before placing your order. If for any reason I do not have the item you ordered in stock, your order will be canceled and your payment will be returned to you in full. I reserve the right to cancel any order.
+ What is your shipping policy?

** The buyer is responsible for uninsured/ unregistered packages. If you would like your order sent with registered mail, please contact me before purchasing. Items sent without tracking or insurance cannot be recovered or refunded.**

I ship to every country supported by Paypal. Every item is shipped from the Netherlands, priority via TNT Post. The shipping prices are based on the weight and size of your purchase. Most of the packing materials used are recycled/second-hand.

I ship orders Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. After that, shipping times are estimated based on information provided by PostNL; please note that these shipping times do not include possible time at Customs. The estimated shipping time is calculated in weekdays, as follows:

Netherlands: 1-3 days
EU countries: 3-5 days
Other EU territories: 5-14 days
Everywhere else: 5-30 days

It is the buyer’s responsibility to add any applicable taxes and/or customs fees. I cannot be held responsible for addresses that were filled in incorrectly by the buyer. If your Paypal address is different from the address you supply via Etsy, I'll get in contact unless I hear from you first (this can delay your order a few days).

If you'd like shipping insurance and/or tracking, please send me a Convo before purchasing. Every item is carefully examined and tested before shipping, and I cannot be responsible for items lost or damaged in transit if you choose not to insure your package. However, if that does occur, I'll do my best to resolve that issue. If your order has not arrived within a week of the estimated delivery time, please contact me at frankandgertrude(at) Please note that tracking is not available for some destinations.

*** Please note: As of April 18th, 2012, I've been made aware that packages to the U.S. are taking unusually long to arrive. Please take this into consideration before placing your order. If you have just placed an order, please contact me within an hour of placing your order if you would like to cancel, as many orders are shipped the same day. I cannot cancel an order once it's been shipped.
Refunds and Exchanges
+ What is your return policy?

I want you to be happy with your order! Every item description is as detailed as possible, with color, material, and measurement descriptions, and any questions you may have about an item are more than welcome.

However, I realize that even with the most detailed description, buying something online can still be a bit mysterious, so please contact me within 7 days of delivery if you are not happy with your purchase. Once I receive the returned item(s) in their original condition, I will issue store credit or an exchange for the amount of the original purchase minus shipping costs.

With any type of return and exchange, please contact me with your name, address, and order number, and I will tell you how to proceed. Please do not send anything back without contacting me first; unauthorized returns will not be exchanged. Returned items must be in their original, unused condition with all tags and packaging. Custom orders cannot be returned.

+ Repairs:

Although my items are meticulously handmade, there's always a chance that something might not work quite right. If you received an item that arrived faulty please contact me within a week of arrival. I will also repair faulty hardware and zippers within 6 months of your purchase. If you prefer to have the repair done yourself I can offer a partial refund (up to 20% of the original price, depending on the type of repair).

+ Leather goods:

All of my leather items are made from second-hand leather and/or upholstery scraps, so they are all 'upcycled' and limited edition.

Since leather is a natural product, it is perfectly natural to find occasional blemishes, scars, texture differences and slight color variations on one hide. This is especially true for 'upcycled' leather.

If I feel any of these above mentioned has a greater impact on function and/or appearance of bag I will mention so in listing and price item out accordingly.

+ Custom Orders

One of my favorite things is coming up with new, unique fabric combinations. However, if you'd like one of my designs in a different fabric, I'll do my best to make it happen if the fabric you want is still in stock. I can also work with you if you'd like one of my designs in a different size (to fit a phone or laptop, perhaps?). For some custom orders there is a $25 pattern fee. I begin working on custom orders once payment is received.

+ Reserving items

You can reserve an item and/or custom listing for up to one week. After one week, ready-to-ship items will go back with the regular stock and may sell out. If you would like to order a custom item and cannot pay within one week, I will set up a separate listing for a non-refundable deposit at 20% of the total cost. I do this because I have very limited amounts of each fabric, and this will ensure that I can recover some of the material costs should you decide to cancel your order.
