“I know! Let’s just make it then.”

When lacking, just make: that’s my usual approach to life’s material shortcomings. Need, want or just for fun, I’ve found that whatever it is can often be created from things that are right on hand, with just a bit of crafty ingenuity.

For me, crafting is a way of life. It’s as natural as breathing or sleeping-- and as persistent an urge as eating. Knitting, spinning, natural dyeing, embroidery, sewing, paper crafts-- each day, I go where my whim takes me. Sometimes, it’s back to remaking a familiar favorite; other times, it’s giving form to that new idea that’s been brewing in my head. And that, in turn, can lead me off in an unexpected direction altogether. Though I often don't know how these projects will ultimately turn out, what’s certain is that it’s fun and rewarding-- and I love it.

Just as my interests are diverse, so are the things you’ll find here in my shop. Each item started as a creative vision in my mind, inspired by nature, everyday life, picture books, traditions and too, by my curious & mischievous son. They are also answers to the simple question with which I begin each morning:

“What shall I make today?”

From my atelier, with cheer.

{ ON NATURAL DYEING }
Making use of local natural resources. Living with the seasons. Enjoying the colors nature has to offer. These are some of the reasons why natural dyeing has always held an appeal for me. And since I’ve started, I also love the way it’s made me more attentive to my natural surroundings. It’s amazing to see how much is available even in an urban environment, if you only pause to look.

Each skein of embroidery floss is carefully dyed in small batches. Even with the same dyestuff, the color can vary according to the growing conditions of the plant and sometimes from plant to plant. In addition, my method of dyeing is mainly instinctual--I do what seems or looks ‘right’ at that time, so different batches of the same dyestuff can yield slightly different results. But for me, that’s what makes this fun--the small surprises and delights the variations can bring.

As a result, the color obtained in a single batch is subtly unique and cannot be repeated exactly. So if you see something you like, grab it while it’s available!

Same can be said for the dyestuffs. I work with both commercially available natural dyes and those that I gather locally. While the commercial dyes can usually be obtained year-round, the local resources are almost always seasonal. The colors from these materials will only be available during that season and once gone, will not be available again until the following year. So please keep this in mind too while you shop.

While each item has been carefully pre-mordanted and/or mordanted to achieve colorfast results, I cannot guarantee that they are absolutely so. Some colors remain unchanged years down the road; others can mellow somewhat over time. But that too, I’ve found, is the beauty of natural dyes--colors that live, change and age, just like people.

Still, it’s best to take good care of projects created from naturally dyed items. For best results, I recommend hand washing in cool water with a gentle cleaning agent and drying and storing out of direct sunlight.

One last thing: I make every effort to portray the colors as accurately as possible, but please remember that colors can vary from one monitor to the next.
