About

I finally figured out what I want to do when I grow up

Fused Glass inspires me. Opening up my kiln after hours of firing is like Christmas. It's about mixing varying shapes and colors of COE 90 or 96 glass, often combining dichroic glass with textured glass to get a 3D effect and not knowing what the result will be until I open up that kiln door. And when it works, it's glorious.

Sometimes it starts with an obsession about a shape I can't get out of my mind. Sometimes the glass tells me what shape it wants to take, what color and texture combinations might work, and how it wants to be laid out. Once I have the raw materials designed perfectly, I have to get it in the kiln without messing it up so it fires perfectly. Then I shape and cold work it until it's just right. And then I fire it again.

I work out of my Chicago studio using a small kiln. I'm dreaming of having a bigger kiln some day soon.

Overseeing my operation are my two helpers, Ziggy and George, my two kitties. While they can't understand why I don't pet them when my hands are covered in glass or I'm in the middle of a delicate design, they are always willing to stare at me until I get up, wash my hands and do my duty.

My other helper is my husband, Chuck, who appropriately says nice things about the endless parade of fused glass pieces I trot out for him to admire. He is a good husband.

While I've done arts and crafts all my life thanks to my crafty mother, Fran (the Doll Lady of Bardolph), fused glass for me is truly something special. I dream about it at night and can't wait to open up the kiln in the morning to see what I've made.

I feel like I'll never stop learning with this medium and I can't imagine anything better than continuing to play with glass. After many careers as a writer, teacher, web developer, artist, jewelry maker and even an ice cream lady (okay, that was a long time ago!), I've finally figured out what I want to do when I grow up.
