About APG & PureResin
APG Studios was created in 2008 as an outlet for my various hobbies, primarily photography and graphic design. I chose a name that reflected me (my initials are APG) and added the "studios" to keep it generic so I could explore a variety of crafts under one entity. It was a slow and scattered beginning, but in 2013 I found my focus. I completed my Associates in Graphic Design and decided to pursue my creativity more intentionally. I revisited a past love of mine, perhaps my first artistic love: sculpture. There is something about creating in 3D that has always been so wonderful to me.
My focus on creation these days may be sculpture, but all I have loved over the years such as photography, drawing, design, and even marketing, have all helped me to improve and promote APG Studios. No skill goes unused in my mission to create.
As a part of APG Studios, PureResin (a name suggested by my Mommy) was created as a specific outlet for my resin designs, many of which are Michigan-based. While not 100% of my creations are about Michigan, they are made and inspired by the life I have spent here, calling Michigan my home.
I have always had a love of all things vintage, and one day my Mom who frequents estate sales, found an old resin casting kit. The kit included polyester resin, some jewelry findings, and several molds. I had always been curious about resin, and I guess this kit gave me the push I needed to actually try it out... granted that kit sat in a closet for the first few months while we waited for a good time to try it. Eventually I stopped waiting for a good time, and just dove right in... though I did buy new resin, I wasn't sure if 40+ year old resin would react as intended.
I started casting the typical paper weight type molds, with embedded objects, but soon decided it was more fun to find strange molds, since I love to experiment. I then began adding color and trying new techniques with every step of creation. Each mistake I made only gave me more inspiration about what to try next. After casting so many different and random objects, it was time to start seeing what I could create with what was laying before me. The moment I glued a Michigan shape onto that rocky shape, I just knew I had something I had to share.
All of my resin creations are hand cast, colored, and finished using my own two hands. Several of the molds I use were something I found or purchased, but recently I have started creating my own molds as well; a slow and tedious, albeit rewarding process.
My hope is that I find others who are just as passionate about Michigan as I am, and will share my enjoyment and appreciation for what I have created.
