Living the dream

I started out as a hobby beader nearly two decades ago, making simple beaded necklaces and earrings in my free time as gifts for friends and family. I've always loved jewelry and gemstones, and after my second child was old enough for daycare, I decided to turn my passion into my day job. Since then, I've learned so much about jewelrymaking and metalworking, and I am totally captivated by the whole process. Now, I can't imagine doing anything else! Creating jewelry is an essential part of who I am. If I wasn't able to sit down and create the pieces I dream up, a huge piece would be missing from my life.

My talented husband is also a creative-type! If you'd like to see his beautiful hand-made jewelry, made from eco-friendly SaRaiFo ("Save the Rainforest") and self-collected wood, head over to LivoltArts.etsy.com.

Frequently asked questions

What is filled gold?

Filled gold (also called gold fill) is a type of metal comprised of 14k gold electroplated over brass or copper. The layer is much (at least 10x) thicker than the gold layer on regular plated-gold jewelry. Because of the thickness and stability of the gold layer, filled gold can withstand heating and forging, and is suitable for use in more complex jewelry pieces. As it is chemically bonded to the core metal, the gold will not flake or peel off.

Filled gold is an excellent alternative if you don't plan to wear your ring every day. If you do, though, maybe consider going with solid gold. Solid gold is harder, and less likely to lose its shape over time - and will never tarnish or discolor.

Will my filled gold jewelry tarnish?

As a rule, gold fill does not tarnish. You may see a bit of darkening on the small surfaces where the metal ends (the tips of the prongs in a claw setting, for example), but you can easily clean this away with a regular tarnish remover. The more the piece is worn and touched, the less likely it is that you will notice this happening, though, because the natural oils in the wearer's skin will protect the metal from air, therefore preventing oxidation.

Will my gold fill jewelry ever lose its gold layer?

While gold fill does have a thicker, more stable layer of gold than, say, plated gold, it will eventually wear off. This will likely take years to happen, but eventually, yes, it may, especially if you wear your ring every day. This won't affect the actual look of the ring, but will make it more susceptible to tarnishing (and make it more likely that you could have an allergic reaction to the metal, if you're sensitive to copper and/or brass). If you are looking for a wedding or engagement ring, I always recommend having your ring made in solid gold. If you're looking for a beautiful ring to wear for fun, though, gold fill would be a good choice :)

Is it possible to have my ring resized?

Because some designs cannot be resized, it is always best to know your exact ring size before you order. However, if you don't know exactly which size you'll be needing (for eample, if you're purchasing an engagement ring, or a gift for someone else), a resizing may be possible. If there is a possibility you'll be needing a resizing, please let me know before you place your order, and I'll tell you if the design you are interested in purchasing can be resized.

My ring doesn't fit. How do I have it resized?

If your ring doesn't fit, please let me know as soon as possible. If the design of your ring is conducive to resizing, I will be happy to take care of it for you. Just pay shipping one way, and I'll take care of the rest :)

If you decide to take the ring to a local jeweler for resizing, be sure to tell them if your ring is made of gold fill. Gold fill becomes very soft when it's been heated, so it will need to be work-hardened after resizing. If you have problems with your ring after bringing it to a third-party jeweler, I may be able to repair your ring, for a fee. Please contact me first.
