The Girl who Gives Away Horses

My four-legged partner, Cole’, short for Sobea Collector, was my inspiration to start a second job. As a wise man once said, “Equis costus muchus.” I have found that to be very true, one turned into three and the bills somehow became larger.

I run a small program that challenges girls to learn about God, horses, and themselves. If they complete what usually amounts to two years of work (Complete Parelli Level 2 and many other things) they get to own and take home the horse they have been partnered with free of charge.

I have been trying to find a way for Cole’ and the other horses to help make their own money. At 12 and below, they are too young to have their own Etsy shop, child protection laws, and all that. I tried to have them help with mine, but glass ornaments… It didn’t work out so well, so we settled on figurehead or mascots for now, until they come up with a better idea.

I picked up beading ornaments when someone gave me some seed beads. My mom likes Victorian decorations, so I thought I would try to make her a Christmas present. I did, and still had beads left over. I made a couple more. I might have quit, but I was hired for a very boring day job. My job required sitting, watching, and very little else. Out of self-defense, I took my beading to work to stave off boredom, always designing and never repeating a pattern, that boredom thing again. My collection grew, took over a box, outgrew that, took over most of the extraneous boxes lying around my house, at which point I realized I should be selling some of my growing collection. I experimented with a couple of venues and settled on Etsy.

    Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator, Teacher

I love to facilitate the horses teaching the girls. My partner in the journey to level 4 and beyond is Cole. The rest of the horses are in the program. If a girl sticks with it and gets to level 2 she gets the horse she has been playing with,

  • Cole

    Bethanys Levels Partner

After teaching Level 1 to four different people she said no more, so in succession Mint, Tekoa, Gwendolyne, and Countess came to teach girls about God, horses, and themselves. Cole enjoys the higher levels and learning new things at her own pace.

  • Mint

    Teacher Extraordinare

Mint has been teaching level 1 for years. He looks forward to the girl who will take him all the way through level 2 so he can go home with her to his forever home. He is the best horse I have ever seen about being exactly the horse the girl needs.

  • Countess

    Teacher, Learner

Countess is the newest member of the crew. A thoroughbred, she was rescued from starvation along with the rest of the yearlings from her barn after being sent to a trainer who did not feed them. She is learning the ropes of teaching level 1.

  • Gwen

Also known as Gwendolyn Rose, the pure blooded Arabian mare graduated level 2 and now lives with her girl pushing the limits of levels 3 and 4. Gwen Came to us when her former owner had to move out of state and could not take her horse.

  • Tekoa

At over 16 hands, Tekoa is an imposing red appendix quarter horse. He loves birdseed and living with his girl. He was given to the program after his former owner got married and lost interest in him.
