.·:*¨¨*:·. OH, and about the name...With my sister's coaxing I opened my Garden Of Weedin' Girl shop. At the time, it was quite apropos. I was working at a plant nursery doing some weeding and such and I, being the collector that I am, needed to “weed out” my accumulations of inheritances, yard sale finds, and thrift store treasure hunting! So Garden Of Weeding Girl seemed just right, although, as I look back on it now, it should have been Garden Of Beading Girl for this shop! (But I've been GardenOfWeedinGirl much too long to change things now, so here I am!) In time, so as not to “junk” up my beaded shop, I opened another one to sift through and destash my collections...you'll find them in TheAtticNest. Please visit http://www.TheAtticNest.etsy.com to find the treasures I'm digging up! .·:*¨¨*:·.

I love this cute hair stick! It's beautiful, and very well made! I'm looking forward to wearing it tomorrow!

About

"Nobody's gonna' buy a HATPIN!”

That's what I said when my sister suggested that I make and sell hatpins on line! She had just found a web site where handcrafted items abounded named “Etsy.” I needed some “pin” money (pun intended!) to supplement my husband's early medical retirement.

It all began one evening while on a visit to her home...she had been making “hatpins.” She wanted us to sit down and make some together so that I could see how much “fun” it was. She gathered all of her treasured beads, pins, and curiosities to the dining room table and we began to “create”! I was a slow starter, but eventually got the hang of it and soon had a handful of gorgeous Victorian style hatpins made, proudly showing them off and photographing them! I was hooked! As in hook, line, and sinker hooked!

For months I had been brainstorming, trying to come up with an idea for a home-based business that would enable me to let my creative juices flow, stay at home, and still make a few extra dollars! She suggested that this would be a great way to make a little extra money...to which I immediately expressed, “Hatpins?!!!! Nobody's gonna' buy a hatpin!” She teases me about that and quotes me often...especially when I'm having a very successful day!

As time went on, my primitive designs developed into more intricate ones. I began to gain a loyal following of repeat buyers who expressed love for my creations and shared their stories with me. They shared the “where and when” my pins would be worn, which I enjoyed immensely!

The more designs I created, the more ideas swirled 'round in my head. I took my hatpins and I shortened them...they became stick pins and ascot pins. I then took the short pins and glued them to sticks...they became hair sticks! My customers were ordering my hair sticks to be used as shawl pins so eventually I coupled the hair sticks with rings...they became shawl pins and rings, sometimes paired as “sets”! Then I brought my love of vintage silverware patterns into the mix and added a new dimension to my shawl pin sets...those made from antique silverware.

...And it all started with HATPINS! What a journey, now bringing you a variety of handcrafted creations.
I've done custom work along the way...even creating special pins for a Mad Hatter's birthday party, along with miniature pins to be worn in a Mad Hatter's pin cushion ring!
My shop gives me much pleasure. It gives me the opportunity to do several things that I love...
~*~First, I love creating hatpins...WHO KNEW!
~*~Second, I love photography! Setting up my pins and getting just the right “feeling” for a listing is very rewarding.
~*~Third, I love to wrap up special gifts, so I embellish each special “gift” box individually for each pin!
~*~Fourth, I have to admit, I do love to have a little extra spending money ;) ...and
~*~Fifth, I am able to create something that will make someone else happy, also! I LOVE IT!

...So that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! The rest is history!

Who knows where the next bend in the road will lead me...I'm lovin' the journey and the interesting people that I meet along the way. My shop has been a blessing. I so appreciate Etsy for the opportunity to be able to have my “virtual” shop and for my customers for their continued support. OH...and of course my family...my husband is continually amazed at the amount of “hatpins” that I'm shipping out, and he's mighty proud to show them off every chance he gets!

My pins have adorned costumes...
Accented a New York Fashion Week fashion...
Accessorized hats...from wedding hats to Kentucky Derby fashions...
Been worn by brides, bridesmaids, grooms, as well as wedding attendees...
Have been used by a “Bee Queen” to pin together her ribbon banner...
Alice in Wonderland pins are worn on the book cover of a published novel...
Many of my pins are being given as unique gifts for “that someone special”...
My teapots have even decorated doll houses as miniatures.

I am privileged to have my creations worn around the world! Who knew! (besides my sister, I mean! :D)

Special Alice in Wonderland pins accented an Alice in Wonderland tablescape which was photographed by Sarah Hays Photography, La Vie le Gage Couture Events Wedding Planning for the October 31, 2011 issue of Style Me Pretty: http://www.stylemepretty.com/2011/10/31/mad-hatter-wedding-inspiration-from-la-vie-le-gage-hays-photography

As my homemade, handmade business grew I enlisted my daughter, Bonnie, as my “Personal Postal Person” to package and ship for me. My husband, Ron, has generously designated a portion of his shop for cutting my shawl and hair sticks.

Thanks, for not only stopping by my shop to check it out, but taking the time to read through this just to learn a little bit more about me and how it all came together! Enjoy browsing and come often...I'm always creating new designs! I only offer things that I love, and I would love to put together something handmade and special for you! I'm waiting to hear from you...
