Unraveling my story, one handbag at a time.

Growing up I had a hair dresser, top of the trends Mom who loved making clothes for my sister and I. A child of the 80's, I had lots of handmade stirrup pants, bubble skirts, oversized sweatshirts and kool-ots. They complimented my perm and malls bangs so perfectly! But, as I got older, I started to think it was so uncool to wear handmade clothes, so I was embarrassed to wear my Moms creations. How naive I was!

So, as a way to get me to appreciate all of her hard work, Mom helped me make my OWN pair of boxer type shorts. I'm pretty sure we both said some things we didn't mean during that project. It was brutal. Patterns, pins, grains, against the grain, grrrrrr!

I walked away from that experience more keenly aware than ever of my Moms creative talent. But also NEVER wanting to sew another thing in my life!

Fast forward to me, 10 years later, married with two daughters under the age of 3. With the craziness of young children, I needed an outlet. My creative side was itching to come out. So with the help of my friend, I dusted off the ol' sewing machine. And made a purse. Then another. Then people started asking me if I'd make one for them. And that's how it started!

I had no idea that I retained ANYTHING Mom taught me that day. And when I lost her to cancer when I was only 19 years old, I never dreamed that one day I'd not only use what she taught me, but love it! I so wish she could be here to see me now <3

If there was one thing I learned as a child, watching my Mom work her craft both at work (hair) and and home(sewing), I realized that there is great value in handmade. And using your craft to make a living is something that most people only dream about, but I've experienced in different ways my entire life!

I started my etsy shop as a way to ship to my far away customers. And that was all it was, until 2011, when I shifted my focus and realized the value in actually selling on etsy!

I pull a lot of my inspiration from the people around me. The clothes and shoes my friends wear give me some great ideas! I love taking those ideas and translating them into purses. I enjoy creating character in my bags with the details. Pleats, ruffles, contrast/creative stitching , color blocking or even just finding new ways of manipulating fabric. That is essence of Gathered & Sown. Always changing, always growing, but always unique ;)

Every time I walk into my sunny, backroom studio, I drink a sip of my ever present coffee, take it all in, and silently thank God for this gift He gave me. A gift He knew I had all along, and was all part of His plan for me. The gift of exercizing the creativity He put in me....and getting paid for it :D

Additional policies and FAQs
Custom Orders-
I love to work with my buyers to create their dream item! But a few points to mention about custom orders...

1) They will take longer-
If the size, shape or even details deviate from my listed design at all, I will have to make a new pattern, which I am happy to do. But this takes time. Designing is a process, and I want to do it right. Behind the scenes, I may have to make the purse 2 or 3 times to get it right and have it ready to pass on to you.

2) There may be additional costs- If I have to add to the size of the bag, each small adjustment means more time, more leather, more thread, more interfacing, maybe even more hardware. I will be upfront with you about additional costs before you buy.

3) The bag has to match my brand...
Let me explain :)
I put a lot of thought and time into the products that I put my name on. When I do a custom order, people might see it and ask where it came from. If it has a completely different aesthetic than any of my current designs, I may be steering buyers who are looking for a product that isn't truly "Gathered and Sown" . Which brings me to....

4) I will not copy another artists design. This is a biggie....
I am happy to look at pictures to serve as inspiration, or to help me understand what size/look you are going for. But I know what another artist puts into their work, and I don't want to take that away from them.
I love it when a customer shows me a basic picture and asks me to show me what my artistic vision would be. It's a compliment to my work and I'm happy to have some inspiration.

5) I will make suggestions and be open if I don't think something will work or look right. But if through conversations, the buyer wants to proceed against my advice, I can not guarantee the end result. I try to be open and honest about how things work in bag construction, and we can work together to find a solution if we disagree. Communication is key ;)

6)There are no refunds on custom work.
Since I cannot resell custom pieces, I will not give any refunds on custom orders.
