From a 9-5 to creative work at home.

I'm Gemini, and I started Gemsy Studio in 2017 after spending some years as an environmental science librarian. I had a long commute and a 2-year-old daughter at home, and I realized after some time that I was starting my day unhappy and grumpy, and coming home the same way. I decided to leave that job and open up my own crafty business!

I've been sewing since I was a kid but it was only in my early twenties that I picked it up as a serious hobby. I left my mom’s old machine back in Vancouver when I moved to Ottawa in 2010 and bought a new, simple machine for myself. I started making garments from independent pattern companies, and more recently I learned about modern quilting and making bags and wallets. I work primarily with quilting cotton and cork for accessory goods. Having a young kid also means I've been making clothes for babies and tots, so I use the popular Grow With Me Pants pattern because they're so fun to make and economical to use.

My business goal is to design all of my own material one day, so I've been working on improving my artistic and design skills by learning surface pattern design. I enrolled in Bonnie Christine's Surface Pattern Design Immersion course and I haven't looked back. I feel ready to start designing and printing my own fabrics. Watch me slowly convert all of my stock over to my own designs!

I learned how to sew when I was young, but it wasn't until I was in my twenties that it really took off. I upgraded my machine, hoarded indie patterns, and relied on muscle memory to make clothing, bags, and more. I value handmade goods.
