About

Idle Hands

My mom instilled in me a love of reading and learning how to do things myself. When I was about 7-8 years old, she taught me to sew and crochet. I started off making clothes for my dolls and stuffed animals, often "borrowing" (read: taking without permission) some of my mom's supplies.

As I got older, I dabbled many different arts: graphic design, painting, a VERY brief period of mosaics (let's not talk about that), etc. Most of my projects were short-lived hobbies.

Flash forward to 2011: I was shopping around for cool/nerdy baby shower gifts for my best friend, because she has the same quirky taste that I have. Thanks to Pinterest, I found a lot of DIY projects.

Then one fateful day (cue mystical music), I hurt my back scooping dog food (don't laugh...that's mean). So while I was laying on my back recovering, I was bored and decided to make something from the left-over yarn. I posted pictures of my creations on Facebook, and I had an overwhelming response from my friends and family. With their support and constant prodding, I finally opened my store in April 2012 and haven't looked back.

My goal is to keep making stuff as long as I'm having fun. I think you can feel the love and care in hand-made things, regardless if it's a stuffed toy or an baby shower invitation.

I draw inspiration from anything, including current trends or nerdy cartoons I used to watch. My favorite sources of ideas are my friends and family. The men in my life, in particular, like to give me awesomely weird suggestions.

So you might be wondering, "What does 'gensquared' mean?" Gen² (phonetically: "Gen-Gen") is one of my childhood nicknames. When you have a name like Genevieve, you tend to have a lot of nicknames.
