Very attractive. Great quality. Reasonably priced.
The idea of the Kenzie occurred on Monday, Oct 9, 2017.
Wow! How can this be so specific?!?!
Well, that day was Canadian Thanksgiving, and our friends-families were getting together to celebrate. Our families are linked because the “men” in the families all play hockey together, as well as the kids.
It was during this holiday, that the idea occurred. But before that, let’s please go back in time a little…
For years, these same families would get together to play board games, celebrate Christmas or New Years’ or Thanksgiving or birthdays, go camping, or just enjoy dinner. When getting everyone together, the conversations quite frequently turned into technology and software development discussions. There would be constant talk of ideas for software start-ups, discussions of seeking Venture Capital, and more. My business partner (the wife of my friend) and my wife’s eyes would sometimes glaze over during these conversations, as they are in healthcare and not software developers.
My business partner, Karen, enjoyed baking and creating cool recipes. She was known in our group, and at her church, and at her work, for baking the most delectable cookies and treats, especially her “world famous” Nanaimo bars. Mmmm!
But her other passions are her crafty nature, creating hand-made goods. She has made all kinds of neat things, and keepsakes for her children and family. Her home is warm with the years of these memories and items throughout. Karen would love to start a business, perhaps baking premium cupcakes or the Nanaimo bars, of course. Not hi-tech. Just ole fashion.
Me? Well, I am the business minded person too. Spent a lot of time banging keys on the keyboard programing software, and then built a successful software consulting firm out of those efforts. Love being my own boss, but wow, the workload is really 10x.
I’ve always wanted to start another company and dreamed of creating a revolutionary software product that would change the world, lol. :). But also, I love to cook – and wanted to start a restaurant. Love my kids – and wanted to start an indoor playground. Gaming was fun – so my son and I also wanted to start an arcade for the community. These types of things I wanted to start were because I wanted to build something closer for my family, something we could all do together – and something to engage the community. Life is a rush, and if there was a way to blend work, family, and community, that would be so amazing!
So, fast forward to Oct 9, 2017.
We were sitting down to eat a delicious Thanksgiving, and I heard music playing in the background. When looking to where the music was coming from, there I saw a really adorable crochet giraffe, with music coming forth. Pretty cool! What a great idea I thought! and got up to take a look. Well, as fate would have it, the giraffe was actually sitting in front of a Google Home device, blocking my view of the device, not covering over it. And that is when the idea hit. The idea for the Kenzie was to create a family of crochet animals that could be seated over, ie. cover, Google Home or Amazon Echo devices. :)
Then the ideas start flowing from there…
It’s funny how this occurred. There is a line in a movie, “See a need, fill a need” and that rang true. As electronic devices are being more pervasive in the household, aesthetics, design, and choice will become more critical.
How do I as a homeowner, integrate these devices into a feel that is warm and blends into my home design?
How can an adult, kid, or senior citizen connect with technology, in an manner that is personal, supportive, and engaging?
We hope our Kenzies will be the first step. We hope, and to use a hi-tech term, that these cute Kenzies will be a “disruptive” (definition: innovative or groundbreaking) product in home décor.
So, thank you for reading about this journey. Maybe this has even helped create a spark of an idea with you as well. It takes an idea to start, but more importantly, it takes an action to continue.
Please help us reach our goals and look forward to watching this all unfold.
Our partner hires and manages our production team of skilled workers, including single moms, elderly, and others who would not have an opportunity to earn an income and receive health care. All Kenzies are 100% handmade.
