About

Luxury Hand-Painted Silk by Gilat Ben-Dor

When I was 13 years old, I spent a summer visiting my aunt abroad in Tel Aviv, where she showed me how to paint on silk using a special "silk resist" technique. I loved our projects and over the years, added many more experiences to my artist toolbox -- including living in Italy and Japan.

Meanwhile, I also delved into other pursuits, and became an author, speaker, sommelier, and overall entrepreneur. Several years ago, I rekindled my art through watercolor, and creating life milestone commemorative pieces -- and one of my clients asked if I could create a silk Chuppah (wedding canopy) for her daughter's wedding.

I created the silk canopy, and in the process, created a "practice" silk scarf....Well, the canopy but also the scarf were a big hit and I have been working full-throttle in silk ever since!

I use a 15-step process for each piece, which involves steps such as loom stretching, building a newsprint 2-ply "quilt" for each piece prior to steam setting it, and other components. Work intensive? Yes, but I consider this to be a labor of love. I am very passionate about what I do, and believe everyone should follow their passion.

I hope to get to know you and answer any questions you may have.

"Ars Lunga, Vita Brevis."
(Art lasts, life is short).

Enjoy life!

My hand-painted silk pieces reflect my passions for beauty and rich experiences. I design each piece based on a vision or a memory from my travels. Nature, color, seasons and even food and wine play a prominent role in my inspirations.

Additional policies and FAQs
Please remember that you are purchasing an original work of art in silk. Any piece that is made to order will be re-created according to the original design and colors chosen; however, each piece is made by hand – not a machine – so no two pieces will be exactly the same. This is considered a good thing, the mark of variance by the hand of the artist!

Silk painting and dying is a fluid art form, so you may see occasional dye drops, spots and irregularities, which are also considered a normal part of a hand-made silk creation.

SILK CARE: Silk is a durable, natural fabric but also requires quick but delicate care when cleaning: Gilat recommends washing your silk piece BY HAND in cool to lukewarm water & a little liquid soap, then rinsing, and air-drying FLAT (on a towel), away from direct sun or heat.

IRONING: Use the silk setting on your iron, iron inside-out and keep the iron moving every 3-4 seconds from each spot. **Please use your judgment when applying these care instructions. GilatSilkArt is NOT responsible for pieces damaged due to user care, ironing, or 3rd party cleaning (i.e., dry cleaning).

COPYRIGHT: One final point: All of the designs shown are my own original designs (© Gilat Ben-Dor, all rights reserved). You are buying the silk piece to enjoy or give as a gift, but the design concept is still owned solely by the artist. Any reproductions or derivative works are subject to the express written approval of Gilat Ben-Dor.

Thank you for supporting artists and their work!
