Gillian Lancaster is an Artist?

Ever since an art teacher got cross with me for being unable to draw "his way", I shied away from doing any kind of art. I've continued to enjoy crafts and hands on arts, but picking up a pencil or paintbrush places me straight back in the shoes of that 12 year old girl who heard she was no good at art.

Fast forward to 2015 when I came across a story about a '100 days' project. The goal was to commit to doing something creative everyday for 100 days, and then post the results to Instagram. I'd recently found a Udemy course on watercolor for beginners, and liked the "no foul, no fault" approach of the teacher, and it started to unknot the school girl fears. Clearly I was never going to be a great artist, but I could paint at my level, and that was oddly liberating.

I joined the project, agreeing to create a watercolor painting of a flower every day for 100 days. I've always loved flowers, and so thought this was a project i could handle. The first painting surprised me, and the warmth of the response I got from other people was very encouraging. (You can see my work here:

This encouraged me to try other kinds of art, and when the opportunity came to be included in a juried art show, I decided that it was time to own the title, "artist" and create art to submit. I was already playing with canvases, light strings and handmade paper textures, and wondered how it would work to add a drawing over the top? I began sketching in pencil, then went over the lines with a watercolor brush, but it wasn't as crisp an effect as I wanted. I picked up a nearby Sharpie, marker, and suddenly I was getting the effect I desired! In time I found Sharpies in different widths, and used them to create different effects. The art you see on this site was the result.

I loved the art I had created, and immediately realized it had the potential to be used in different ways. I scanned and photographed the art, then working in Photoshop, cleaned up the images to create simple outlines. I then used this digital art to create the calendar, greeting cards, prints, and luminaries. I was thrilled to find the items sold well at the art show, and decided to open this shop to make my art available to a wider group of people.
