Announcement    Welcome to the Gilmour Design Collection of Handmade Homewares, Adornments and Accessories crafted in wood from reclaimed and recycled Australian timber. Please spend a little time viewing the range of wooden kitchen and cooking utensils, salad servers and tongs, muddlers and wood tampers and other items such as spoon rests. Also, the store has some wearable jewellery items carved from wood, bone and metals.

Gilmour Design has been an active store on Etsy since 2008 (originally named Forest Treasures). The business is physically located in northern Australia and has been operating since 2001.

My name is Bob Gilmour … I am the owner of Gilmour Design and I make every item listed in the store. I am passionate about great design which combines beauty, function and desirability in a minimalist format resulting in smooth organically-inspired objects made from wood and other materials.

I believe objects we use in everyday life, wear as fashion items or surround ourselves with in our homes should be beautiful in a minimal way without the need to complicate them with unnecessary adornment. The pieces I create for sale are the same as those I make for my own home … my personal ethic is Simple, Beautiful, Minimal.

Every piece of work I create begins with careful selection of materials and is made one item at a time … there is no mass-production. During the creation process, my energy is focused on the work at hand so the best possible outcome is achieved for the finished object. When products leave my studio and make the journey to their forever home, they carry the energy of love, awareness and caring that is imbued during my making process. Shipped items are prepared and packed with the same attention to detail and care that is paramount right through the creation process.

I live and create on top of a mountain range in the lush tropical hinterland of Port Douglas, Far North Queensland, Australia. My environment is rainforest, native bushland with abundant wildlife, permanent creeks, swimming holes and adjacent mountains. The freedom to live within wild nature defines my creative practice and provides inspiration to develop the smooth flowing forms I love ... it also defines the framework by which I live my life ... holistic, aware and connected. I am not bound by the routines and limitations of mainstream society so my work flows with a fluidity and ease from an inner place of knowing without fear, anger or anxiety … Simple, Beautiful, Minimal.

About GilmourDesign

Sales 443
On Etsy since 2008

I made a kitchen utensil from a simple shape I'd drawn on an old floorboard and all my friends wanted one.

As a young kid growing up in a neighbourhood dominated by adults, I spent most of my time doing some sort of creative activity … mostly drawing and painting. As I moved into my teens however, that activity started to include a lot more of making stuff. Model boats and aircraft were the main subjects of interest and I combined found materials with whatever I could convince my mother to buy for me to achieve results. Those early insights into creativity have stuck with me through the years and have come in handy in lots of endeavours.

As the last century drew to a close, I'd arrived at a crossroad in life and was looking for new career options. Time and again, I found myself turning back to those artistic roots. I started making some homewares objects and, in particular, cooking utensils for my own use in the home. Pretty much everybody I knew at the time loved the way I made them and wanted some. After giving plenty away, I realised that it might be time to build a business around my creative work.

The first utensil I made was an organically-inspired cooking stirrer ... which I now call the "Classic Stirrer". It was a very intuitional design drawn onto a piece of re-used floorboard and cut out and shaped … I knew what I wanted and didn't need to overdesign it … which, in my opinion is how great designs happen. I began to use that first rough prototype straight away and it did everything it was supposed to do. At the time, I had no intention of selling any of my creations … it was later when I realised making stuff was in my blood and it was time to get more serious about it.

So, the rest is now history. In 2001, I started my creative business which is now known as Gilmour Design. I began selling a wide range of handmade homewares and sculpture made from wood at local craft and artisans markets and also started selling some work online. The first Etsy shop for Gilmour Design was started in June 2008 and, back then, was named Forest Treasures.

Creative work and the business of creativity is always a work-in-progress … if it stops, then the creative spark is probably dead. Over the years since first committing to a business of designing and making, there have been plenty of changes and transitions in where I have concentrated my efforts. Along the way I've let products go that I no longer enjoy making in order to make room for new interests and I've always held the notion that it's important to be doing something I really like.

The thing that's never changed in this journey however, is my faith in the culture of handmade design and making. The lifestyle which revolves around this endeavour is rewarding and beneficial in an ever-quickening world. Slow living and being in-touch with the natural world is a conscious choice for me … one that I won't be changing any time soon.

Simple, Beautiful, Minimal.

Thank-you for visiting Gilmour Design.

I love the uncomplicated simplicity of minimal design and especially in curvaceous forms whose fluid shape takes inspiration from nature. In my work, I create organically-inspired homewares, wearables and accessories from wood and other materials.

Gilmour Design is a small one-person design and making venture based in Far North Queensland, Australia. It has evolved from a driving force to live a creative life and to share hand-crafted beautiful objects with others.

Every item emanating from the Gilmour Design studio is made with utmost attention to detail and with the highest level of quality.

Gilmour Design was established in 2001 and has a global customer base. The business sells locally in Australia in a major artisans market (Port Douglas) every Sunday where face-to-face engagement with customers is a crucial and valuable aspect of success ... as well as online. Furthermore, Gilmour Design is a proud supplier of diplomatic and parliamentary gift-ware to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet of the Australian Federal Government.

Great communication with customers ... both in person and online ... is considered vital and is a key stone for success.

Gilmour Design delivers products which are either true one-offs ... single items that cannot be replicated ... and also ranges of "unique" stock items ... products like utensils that conform to a set design, but are made one at a time so each individual item is slightly different to the next.

On Etsy, most products listed will be considered as "in stock" unless designated "made to order". Sometimes though, things get a little out of kilter and a product may get made specifically to fill an order. Generally for items like utensils and home-wares, a "made to order" substitution will have no effect on the delivery schedule ... and, at all times, the buyer will be kept in the loop via Etsy Messaging.

Gilmour Design has been open on Etsy since 2008 ... initially with the name Forest Treasures. The shop has moved into its new identity as Gilmour Design to reflect the current direction of the underlying business. Gilmour Design is wholly owned by Australian company Gilmour Creative Pty Ltd (Director and Proprietor: Bob Gilmour).

Thank you for visiting Gilmour Design and I sincerely hope to share my fine work with you soon.

Returns and exchange details
We all experience a bit of "buyers remorse" sometimes or receive an item which isn't what we thought it was going to be ... the former is just another trait of being human while the latter is one of the inescapable quirks of purchasing online. Sometimes also, mix-ups in shipping labels occur and an item intended for someone else might turn up. Whilst inconvenient, such incidents can always be navigated using communication.

If a buyer receives an item that he or she is not happy with on the basis of quality or function, the person should make contact via Etsy Messaging with Gilmour Design immediately to initiate communication. The situation can generally be rectified with a return/refund or a return and product exchange. In these cases, the cost of return shipping is the responsibility of the buyer although Gilmour Design will usually cover the shipping cost to send another item.

If the buyer receives the wrong item, Gilmour Design covers all refund/shipping/exchange costs. In that event, please initiate a Message via Etsy straight away.

Refunds (if appropriate) for custom made items are based on several criteria. During the planning and creation stages, the buyer will receive images of the item for approval before shipping. If the item ships and the buyer is unhappy, a communication process with the seller should be initiated via Etsy Messaging. A refund less shipping cost or partial refund less shipping and agreed-upon development fee may be made at the discretion of the seller if the item is deemed to be "re-sellable" at any selling venue. No refunds will generally be available for personalised items which have been laser engraved or otherwise bear features deemed to render them un-sellable in general. As usual, in this sort of case, please communicate with Gilmour Design ... I'm sure we can reach an amicable solution.

In all cases, requests for refund / return / exchange need to be be made within 14 days of receiving an item. Additionally, items to be returned need to be in Unused and Re-sellable condition. All refunds ... either full or partial ... are handled via Etsy's standard refund policy. If additional refund is required (eg. extra postal charges to return wrongly-shipped items), the funds may be forwarded direct to the buyer via PayPal.

Customer satisfaction is of paramount importance and every effort is made to arrive at a satisfactory outcome for the purchaser. Communication with Gilmour Design should be a top priority in any event that the buyer is dissatisfied with any aspect of the purchasing experience.
Payment
All payments for Gilmour Design on Etsy are conducted through Etsy's secure payment system. The accepted options for this shop are PayPal and credit card direct. Gilmour Design also accepts Etsy gift cards.

Orders for standard listings may be canceled if necessary prior to actual shipping. In the case of custom orders, cancellation may be possible by negotiation if the item is deemed to be re-sellable (either on Etsy, physically or via other online venues) by the seller. Generally this is possible unless there is personalisation involved such as laser engraving. For specific answers to any cancellation enquiry, please initiate a message with Gilmour Design.

In the event of order cancellation, full refund is provided through Etsy's standard refund process.

No payments, cancellations or refunds from Etsy-listed items are conducted by any method outside of the Etsy's standard secure transaction system.
Shipping
Gilmour Design has been shipping work all around the world since 2001 ... both as a result of online sales and for face-to-face customers. Shipped items range from single cooking utensils to fine centrepiece bowl forms valued at several thousand dollars.

Australia Post is the preferred shipping vehicle and has been found to be extremely reliable and secure. Item tracking is generally available for all purchases. The standard services available for Etsy purchases are Domestic (in Australia) Road Shipping (with tracking included in cost) - generally 5 to 6 days max - and International Airmail to most countries (with tracking available as an option at a small extra charge) - usually around 10 days to UK, USA and Europe.

Other Australia Post shipping service options such as Express Post (Australia) and item insurance are available as an option or by negotiation (please Message if in doubt before purchasing) Such options may require a modified one-off listing to reflect extra postage costs for such services.

Purchased items are generally shipped out before the expected shipping date and all effort is made to ensure that parcels travel in a timely manner. If something arises that might cause a delay in shipping, the buyer will always be notified by Etsy Messaging.

Purchased items are securely and strongly packed in purpose-made packaging. All items generally ship boxed ... with boxes custom-made from recycled heavyweight cardboard. Products are brown paper wrapped and bubbled before boxing. Boxes are carefully made to "fit" the enclosed items so no movement of the product can occur during shipping and reinforced and padded according to the size of the item.

Buyers should be aware that import customs duties and taxes are their responsibility. Gilmour Design does not ship any prohibited items to any country and Customs Declarations reflect the true nature of the item and value. A separate "Customs Invoice" will generally be affixed to international destined packages where required by foreign country import law.

Having shipped handmade objects and artworks around the world, Gilmour Design has never been notified of any item for damage or loss. Buyers can have faith that every effort is made to ensure the safety of their purchased item and that it will arrive at their destination in a timely manner as expected. It should be noted, however, that once items have been shipped and are in the care of the post carrier, Gilmour Design is not responsible for delays in transit or loss / damage.
