Evolution is My Name

Lol. Only the metalheads will get that title.

Okay all joking and play on a Pantera song title aside, I'm going to assume that if you're on this page you might be just a tad curious about the maker of all things Girl Tuesday.

In that case, thank you. I'm honored. Here you go:

My name is Rachel. I live in New Jersey and have for my whole life. New Jersey is hardly as bad as the media will have you believe. I love it here, or maybe the pollution has affected my brain so that I only think I love it here. As of this writing, I am 44 years old and grateful for all of the experience I've gathered along the way. Wouldn't go back to any age. Ever. Not even for a minute.

I've been making, painting, building, creating something for pretty much my whole life. I've had many 'regular' jobs along the way but I've also always had some sort of creative project going on at the same time. It's a gift, to be able to create things but it's also an affliction. I've experienced great disappointment and have had my abilities taken advantage of many times in the past which caused me to swear off art altogether at one point.

It was short lived.

I stumbled across Etsy during one of those voyages down the rabbit hole that can occur when you are searching online for something. One thing leads to another, which leads to another and so on and so on...
When I discovered Etsy I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was like the Holy Grail for artists. A place where you can sell your work but not your soul. And not in obscurity either. Etsy is more than just a website, it is a living, breathing organism that grows and evolves and improves upon itself exponentially. I have learned so much since setting up shop here back in 2009. Learned about creating, the art of selling and customer relations, photography as in how to take a compelling photo of my products, stuff pertaining to marketing and getting 'found' and so much more. I've met some great people and feel a true sense of community here.

Now as far as my work is concerned, there's not really a whole lot to say. I make what I would want to wear. If I wouldn't wear it myself, it won't get made. I love simple but good design and I feel that my pieces exemplify that. I love to play with proportion, usually leaning towards a larger scale especially with my earrings. The rings, too. I am in love with the super wide rings that I have in my shop. The Sequoia Ring especially. Feels amazing to wear, nice and hefty. If you were to get in a fight while wearing that ring, you'd be the winner and the poor sap who got beat would be forever branded with the bark texture from the ring. Please don't try it though. A peaceful solution is always the best solution!

The barbed wire jewelry jewelry has also been another unique facet of my shop. Again, it's origins are from me wanting barbed wire earrings but finding none in the natural world. Since coming up with the barbed wire design, I have sold many, many pairs to both men and women and many times I have received a note from the customer telling me how much they love their earrings. How they feel a little more like themselves when wearing them.

That right there is everything to me. To be able to make something and have someone choose to wear it because it will make them feel more like themself. How awesome is that?

Girl Tuesday Jewelry started out in 2009 and I have no plans of stopping, only plans of expansion and evolution. I just started to get into doing personalized jewelry and have plans for more items like that. Also in the works are pieces using elements that I carved in wax and had cast by a foundry. I'm very excited about that.

In addition to designing and making jewelry, I'm also a paramedic to which most people give me a quizzical look when I'm asked what I do. Well, while the two occupations seem like polar opposites, there's actually one big similar quality to them -- the ability to improvise. To take raw materials in the case of jewelry design or a crappy situation in the case of being a paramedic and spin them into something much better. Beautiful wearable accessories in the case of jewelry design and stability in place of instability in the case of being a paramedic. Both are very interesting occupations!

So there you have it. You can attach a name to the girl in Girl Tuesday--Rachel. You have a question, I'm here to answer it or at least try. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Much love to you all,

Creating something that other people choose to wear and to express themselves with has been the most rewarding experience I've had artistically. It's been a real pleasure and a true gift from God that I'm thankful for every day.

My design philosophy is that jewelry should be easy and fun to wear. If it can be versatile, all the better. I also believe in using only quality materials such as sterling silver, beautiful gemstones and crystals as the components for my designs. I never leave the house without a piece of my own jewelry!
