Please note: This portion of my shop has not been working properly. If you're unable to load the rest of the About section in Chrome, and you really really want to read it (it IS pretty awesome) then try Firefox or another browser.

Hi, I'm Giselle! All that you see in my shop was handmade by me (and only me) at my little home studio in California.

Let me direct you to my social media links so you can see what I'm up to every day. I'm especially active on Instagram if you'd like to see work videos or have a chat about clay.

About Me:

I'm often asked where the name Giselle No. 5 Ceramics comes from. It's simple. I'm the fifth born in a family with seven daughters. My oldest sister and I used to sign cards or letters to each other "No. 1" and "No. 5". When I was faced with the challenge of choosing an Etsy shop name, Giselle No. 5 popped into my head. I also like that it sounds a little bit like Chanel No. 5. So it stuck!

Nearly everyone in my family is creative in some way or another, so I started learning to see creative possibilities at a very young age. My first thought when I need something is whether I can make it instead of buying it. Everywhere I look in my home I can see pillows, curtains, artwork, clothing, and jewelry that I have made or altered.

Several of my family members have Etsy shops if you'd like to see their work.
> Leah (No. 2) has a resin jewelry shop: LulusButterfly.etsy.com
> Normandie (No. 6) makes adorable and unique pet accessories at TuckerandCompany.etsy.com
> My dad, Tom, has his own pottery shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CopperDolphinStudio
> My Aunt Norma now has a jewelry shop as well: JeaniesJewels.etsy.com

I run my Etsy business from our little house in Los Osos, California, balancing my time between family and pottery as I spend my days with my little boy in and out of the pottery studio. Being a stay-at-home mom takes up a lot of time but nobody pays me wages to be a mom and our family needed additional income. When my son was a toddler I started working a few evenings a week to contribute to my husband's income. Selling my handmade items online, I've found a great way to achieve that income right from my home.

My first introduction to clay was in January of 2012. We had recently moved back here to the town where I grew up. I visited my lifelong friend Christine to find that she was starting to set up a pottery studio in her garage. I had a little two-year-old at the time and I tried to resist the lure of the clay since it's expensive and all-consuming, but I was hooked immediately. At the time I was still searching for the best way to make a little extra money and Christine suggested that I make and sell handmade clay stamps on Etsy. She was supportive and encouraging and I can honestly say that my business would never have happened without her friendship and support. Her shop is BackBayPottery.etsy.com.

When I was just making stamps my work space was a small desk in one corner of my living room. The next year I bought a set of vintage dinnerware slip molds and proceeded to pour them in my kitchen, on the only long counter, trying the patience of my long-suffering husband, so I set up a table in the garage instead and saved the kitchen for cooking. Now I am in the middle of setting up full working pottery studio complete with wheel and kilns in my garage. My dad is retiring from his construction business and with his help (and the generous long-term loan of his own pottery wheel) I have slowly fitted out my garage with a mixture of new and secondhand, custom-built and side-of-the-road finds.

As I'm sure you can tell from my pottery, my great joy in my work is in the decoration. I want to engage a person's imagination and senses, hopefully brightening their day in the process. I love rich, vibrant colors with lots of contrast so that's what I use for my glazes. I also love the look of vintage items, so my colors reflect a mid-century influence. I'm the kind of person who, when shopping, touches everything. So I make my pottery a tactile experience as well as a visual one so that my creations will be irresistible to touch. Often I will have an area of raw clay next to a portion of smooth glossy glaze so you can feel as well as see the design. I love to carve, slip trail, and sculpt texture onto my pieces so they interact with the glazes and the user in many different ways.

Thanks for visiting my shop and my About page! Please feel free to send me a conversation any time with questions or comments.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

No returns or exchanges on these orders. Once work has started on a custom or personalized item, the purchase cost is nonrefundable. If the customer chooses to refuse it, I will refund any shipping costs I have not yet paid to a shipping service.

Care instructions

For pottery: Dishwasher and microwave use with handmade pottery will shorten the life of your handmade items.

Glaze and ceramic is very similar to tempered glass. Please be careful not to take an item from the freezer and place into a preheated oven, or vice versa. Thermal shock can cause your pottery to shatter or form stress fractures deep inside that will cause the piece to crack or break at a later time.

Wholesale availability

I do not offer wholesale pricing on any of my products at this time.

Ship-by date on pottery orders

1-2 weeks

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I only sell ready-to-ship pottery in my shop. I batch process orders whenever possible, so I tend to have a day in which I package several orders at one time. Ready-to-ship pottery does not need to be made, so it will usually ship out within one week.
If you purchase a made-to-order, custom, or personalized items I will discuss the turnaround time with you but it will most likely be around 8 weeks. I rarely accept these kinds of orders on pottery at this time, but I may be able to place you on a waiting list for an item.
Ship-by date for clay stamp orders
3-4 weeks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some of my clay stamps are made-to-order and will be 3-4 weeks before shipping out. I am NOT accepting custom orders on clay stamps at this time.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding these policies.

Care instructions

For clay stamps: please wash all stamps in warm soapy water and scrub crevices gently with a soft brush (an old toothbrush works great). Allow stamp to dry thoroughly before next use. You may use a small amount of olive oil on either bisque or polymer clay stamps if you're having issues with sticking.
