We ordered a custom pie plate for our wedding. Giselle did an amazing job! She took a vintage casting mold with a leaf pattern and did some very beautiful handwork on the inside to make it personal to our big day. She truly is an amazing artist with some really great pottery skills. I highly recommend her for custom work. I wish I could upload a photo to my review so you could see how amazing it came out!

About

From supplier to potter ...

The first time I visited my friend Christine's pottery studio in January of 2012, I was hooked.

My son was two years old at the time, and she asked me if I'd like to make a hand- and footprint plaque for the grandparents. Sure, I said. She rolled out a slab of clay and and we pressed one of his hands and one of his feet into it. She let me pick out the stamp for around the edges, and when it was fired I came back and glazed it. Before it came out of the kiln from that second firing, I was already thinking about what I wanted to make next. I didn't realize it yet, but I was already addicted.

Christine had been running her pottery business for about one year at that point and she was starting to get really busy. I started going over at least once a week and eventually she hired me to help her out for just a few hours here and there. I mostly did things like clean and mop the studio, sieve and mix glazes, fill slip bottles. But I soaked up everything she was doing and when the cleaning was done I would play for a little while. I tried slab building, slip trailing, and pinch pots. I watched her dip her dinnerware and mugs, learned how to attach handles, stamped, and carved. One day halfway through the year she asked me to make her some new stamps and from there my first Etsy business, GiselleNo5.etsy.com, was born. There I sell handmade clay stamps in hundreds of unique designs.

I started using my stamps on pottery so I could show examples of finished pieces in my photos. This proved to be very useful when customers would ask me to recommend glazes or glaze techniques to use with the stamps. I could show them the same or similar stamps glazed in different ways and thoroughly answer any questions. After awhile the little pendants and magnets and other stamped samples started to pile up; so I listed them in my shop along with my stamps just to keep down the clutter. But I've never been the type to be happy with the status quo. I started fiddling around with little sculptures instead of just making simple stamped pieces. I made fruits and veggies, a family of snails, guinea pig beads. I slab built a set of plates for my son stamped with animals and words. I started daydreaming about how one day when I could have my own pottery studio I would make dishes for children, piggy banks, mugs, teapots, and baking dishes ...

Well that day is now.

I started to take this seriously long before I was ready. I made slab-built tissue boxes at a friend's studio, poured slip molds in my kitchen, shaped beads at my desk. I fired my little things in with other people's kiln loads and bought glaze one bottle at a time.

Now I'm in the process of setting up my garage as a studio. I have a couple work surfaces, a little storage cart, and a drying rack. In October of 2014 my dad bought a new pottery wheel and asked if he could set it up in my studio until his own studio is done. Since then I've been learning to throw pottery as I've dreamed for three years now. It's everything I hoped it was and more.

My dreams are big but that just means I will always have room to grow!

Here are some of my friends and family, if you'd like to visit their shops!

My dad Thomas: CopperDolphinStudio.etsy.com
My sister Pearl: GrayDecember.etsy.com
My sister Normandie: TuckerandCompany.etsy.com
My sister Leah: LuLusButterfly.etsy.com
My Aunt Norma: JeaniesJewels.etsy.com

Seriously, that's only three of my sisters. I have three other sisters who don't have Etsy shops. Yet.
