gladyspaulus' Shop Announcement

Welcome to my Etsy shop.

I am a felt artist based in Somerset (England).

Inspired by the alchemy of the ancient feltmaking process, my work explores the notion of transformation: By adding water, heat, soap and friction, loose wool fibres become a versatile fabric which is then sculpted into tactile forms.

My background is in fine art painting, but I fell into felt almost by accident back in 2005. I love working with wool; from sourcing a fleece right through to the magic that happens when you add water, soap and a pair of hands. Felt is thought to be the oldest form of textile and it feels very special to be part of such a long tradition.

Through my paternal grandparents I grew up around the magical and highly symbolic world of Indonesian puppetry, dance and imagery. With my other foot firmly embedded in Dutch pragmatism, practicality and Northern European folklore, feltmaking has enabled me to start bringing together these influences into a language of my own. I am interested in the theatrical possibilities of felt, hence my ongoing exploration into headdresses and body adornments. Generally speaking, I find inspiration in the natural world and I am fascinated by the shapes, patters and systems of nature.

Someone once said that feltmaking is at once deceptively simple and endlessly complex. To me, this simplicity is rooted in the earthiness of the raw materials and the basic physicality of the feltmaking process; all that is required is a determined pair of hands and a good dose of patience and flexibility. The fibres can behave in unpredictable ways, but by experiencing and observing the process time and time again, one can learn to work with the fibres, rather than against them.

I increasingly use local and rare wool breeds and I am experimenting with growing and dyeing with plants. I run regular classes and workshops to share my passion with others.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, I have been living and working in the UK since 1995. I currently live in Somerset and I’m a mother of two.
