5 out of 5 starsI received my spindle today and it is as beautiful as I had hoped. It was shipped and received promptly. I haven't had a chance to spin with it yet however I don't anticipate any problems as it spun nicely and well balanced when I was playing with it. A nice surprise was the beautiful stitch marker I received with it. I look forward to using both.

Lampwork Glass Beads from Isinglass Design, Handmade one of a kind Fish, Turtles, Bottles and Pendants
Welcome to my world of glass bead making and felting~ glassbead on etsy! Everything in this shop is handmade by Laurie Ament of Isinglass Design. Each of the glass beads are individually handmade in my home studio over an open flame using ancient techniques known as lampworking. Each color of soft glass is melted and added to the bead, which is then formed and shaped using tools such as scissors, dental picks, graphite paddles and ice tongs. I have been making glass beads since the turn of the century (and a little beyond).
A few years ago, I met a woman who had been researching historical spindles that used handmade glass whorls; she needed a glass artist to help her with her vision of making copies of these tools. After a lot of meeting, researching, talking and product testing, we came up with a design that spun well, looked nice and met the standards for this type of spindle. I am so excited to be able to offer the product of our research and testing in my shop here on etsy! Lois has since moved on to make a lot of other historically accurate spinning tools. You can see her here~ https://www.youtube.com/user/missingspindle
Felt is a newer obsession; I began playing with fiber in about 2015.

How to tell the story of Isinglass Design?
It all began in 1998 when I bought a glass beadmaking kit for my daughter. (well, that's what I told her, anyway...) We opened the book and, looking over each others' shoulders, began what would become a very long journey. Because torches are not allowed in dorm rooms (Who knows why???) I inherited the torch, the glass, the book and all the tools. And, with an empty nest, what else was I to do but make glass beads?
Copy and paste this link for a short instructional video of me at work!

I always say I would never have learned to make glass beads without the help of my daughter, who is a natural artist and 3-d thinker. She'd take a look at the pictures, pick up the glass, and get to work. And if I was on the torch, she was sure to tell me what I was doing wrong (one of the joys of living with a teenager!)
The mesmerizing qualities of glass have pulled me in and made me want to learn more and more about it. The glass I use is nearly all made in Italy, on the island of Murano. The techniques have been around for thousands of years.
Felting was an accident result of hanging out with the local spinners guild so that I could learn how to use the spindles that use the glass whorls I make. The colors and feel of the fiber have a way of grabbing you and making you want join in their song.
My own work doesn’t have a central theme, though much of it is influenced by the colors and shapes in the natural world. One of the things I love about working with glass (not to mention fiber) is that there is an element of surprise to almost everything. Each time I light the torch there is an opportunity to learn something new or experiment with a different idea. My work has changed so much over the years, with organic and sculptural forms becoming my main focus. My regular customers know to keep their eyes open for experimental beads that are part of the evolutionary process, as they may only ever see a couple of them. I am always pursuing new ideas, and often my experiments meld together to send my beads in a different direction.
This quote from Willa Cather describes my feelings well about my own work, and that of other artisans:
'The irregular and intimate quality of things made entirely by the human hand.'
