Techspressionism - Art for the 21st Century

As an undergraduate student at SUNY Binghamton, I studied painting under Angelo Ippolito, a second-generation New York School painter. Ippolito opened my eyes to abstraction. It wasn’t until I integrated the use of the computer and a drawing tablet into my practice as a compositional tool that I truly incorporated “pure abstraction” into my work. My maternal grandmother Kimiye Ebisu was a master calligrapher originally from Japan, and her influence brought an appreciation of the gestural mark into my work. Using digital tools, I often extrapolate these gestures into complex volumetric forms.
At the age of 34, I was awarded a full scholarship into the MFA program at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where I concentrated in Computer Art, and began to develop a body of work on paper and canvas that combined hand painting and drawing with digital composition and archival digital printmaking.

In the past years since my MFA was awarded, I have continued to develop my visual language and process. Most recently I have invented a technique allowing me to layer archival pigment printing on top of oil paint. I then have been going back into the work with oils using small brushwork. I have not seen or heard of anyone else combining these media, probably because of the technical difficulties involved – I use a specialized primer and I had to modify my pigment printer mechanically to allow the passage of thickly painted canvas.

The works in this shop are the recent paintings, prints, and works on paper which I feel convey the ideas I have been working with most fully. I am interested in the intersection of abstraction and technology, and have been developing a body of work which is built around this concept, which I have dubbed “techspressionism”.
