For a good many years, I have been dreaming of developing a ceramics studio with a new attitude… And strangely, the COVID 19 set all the gears in motion for me to begin to build Good Livin’ Ceramics. 2020 derailed almost every aspect of all of our lives, and for me, it left me shattered. Not knowing which way to take my career and finding myself thinking more about the realities of art, the arts community, and why in the world art is so incredibly important to the world. After the shock and loneliness of quarantine seclusion wore off, I found myself spending most of the quarantine just seriously enjoying all of the art I am surrounded by. Of course, as an artist of ten plus years, I have the great fortune of being seriously surrounded more art than I could ever dream of. But even knowing how special it all was, I only realized how special each painting, sculpture, and cup was once I was stripped of human connection. During those long months, I noticed that I no longer used my own mugs for my morning coffee—I always use my own drinkware for normal occasions because, of course, I can remake it if I break it. But during quarantine, I found solace and connection in drinking from any one of my collection of hand made mugs while carefully inspecting one painting/sculpture or another. In this moment, and the weight of how important handmade objects are was fully hammered into me, and I decided to do everything that I can, however I can, to share the human connection exchanged between the maker and the user or viewer to the world in the biggest way possible. So… In late 2020 I changed my morning alarm to 5am and I hit the garage every day to start to get the foundational gears for for Good Livin’ Ceramics turning!

Born and raised in Reno, NV, Tom Drakulich has been a practicing artist and educator for over 10 years. In 2020, in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic, he founded Good Livin’ Ceramics to serve customers with the best quality high craft, handmade ceramics, while setting out a framework for community education and involvement in ceramics. Tom received his A.A. in art history from Truckee Meadows Community College, his B.A. in Criminal Justice from the University of Nevada, Reno, and his M.F.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno. In 2019, he was selected as the City of Reno’s inaugural City Artist.
