Announcement   Functional porcelain ceramics made by none other than Sofia's Dad. Glazes are dishwasher safe, microwave-able and are LEAD FREE. You can eat off of them and drink out of them and I do. Pots are thrown on an electric wheel and fired in an electric kiln. These pieces are decorated using a combination of chattering and etching using a resist. Chattering is a method of allowing a metal "rib" to bounce on the surface of a rotating vessel while the resist method is done by physically painting a resist on with a brush and etching the areas that are left exposed. The latter method can be done multiple times and the combination of techniques results in various delicate and visually complex decorations.

Note: I will ship anywhere that the US Postal Service ships which is almost everywhere. I have successfully shipped to England, Belgium and Australia. If you live outside the US, just send me a message via Etsy or email me at go2sew(at)gmail(dot)com and I will pack the piece, take it to the Post Office, get the shipping price, and edit the listing with said price to your particular country.

What can you say about Jim's work other than it is phenomenal. The details in the calligraphy are just awesome. The contrast of the colors really makes it pop off the vase. I am thrilled to have this amazing piece in my collection. I'm sure it won't be the last piece I buy from Jim.

Wow! Big mug, gorgeous design. Coffee tastes MUCH better when you drink it out of a handmade mug. Trust me, I know.

About

Sofia's Dad's Pots

In 2004 my daughter was born and the realization that pursuing my lifelong dream of making ceramics was either now or never hit home so we jumped in and never looked back. I started making pots in a small back room in our home and quickly outgrew the space. After a couple years of that, the "room" was torn off the back of the house and an addition was added creating a larger space. Things have been moving along quite rapidly as my daughter is 7 already and I have 7 years of making pots under my belt. The processes used are fairly time consuming and I add bodies of work to this store some five times a year.

My work is functional and decorative porcelain fired in an electric kiln. Most of the deco on the more ornate pieces is calligraphic, my own personal calligraphy. I am compelled by a continuous fascination with what happens when pen, pencil or, in my case, brush come into contact with other surfaces like paper, canvas and, in my case, clay. What's left behind is a permanent physical record of many many decisions made quickly during the process. This physical record is not simply visual but is tactile as well and although the internet has yet to deliver tactility, many customers have let me know that they were surprised and happy when they finally got to hold their piece and feel the surface.
