About

Upcycling broken crayons into awesome new ones.

Let me take a minute and introduce myself. My name is Megan. I am a happy stay at home mom to three children ages 6 and under. I love to help people, bake, dance, do arts and crafts with the kids, sew, and of course, make crayons. This project, which you can read about below, started small and has continued to grow. I love that every purchase helps provide school supplies to kids. I love that my kids like to help- they are great at sorting colors! I love that they are learning you can do small things, with great love, and have huge results. I love that only positive things will come from this business project...

Please read on- I am very passionate about this business project.

It all began last year (2017) when my daughter's classroom was throwing away broken crayons. We had been melting crayons at home with the kids, so I offered to take the bucket home and melt them down for the kids in the classroom and the local library. Everyone loved the fun shapes and rainbow aspect of the crayons and I had a blast making them.

Fast forward one year later (and add a child, a move to a new house, and my daughter going into Kindergarten) and we encounter the same situation in Kindergarten.

The teacher is throwing away the broken small pieces of crayons, and I again offer to melt them down and give them back the students. Once again we have a great time melting them down, and the students LOVED them. The word travels quickly around the school, and soon we are being asked- if I bring in broken crayons, may I have rainbow crayons?

After talking to the principal, we do a "Great Crayon Exchange" in the school. Students bring me a sandwich bag of broken crayons, I give you a two pack of rainbow crayons on the spot. It was a huge success! We collected 29 pounds of crayons and gave 107 packs of crayons away.

The Great Crayon Project was born!

I realized that most teachers, families, organizations, and restaurants throw away their left behind and broken crayons.

We collect all of these crayons, at exchanges through the school, collection drop off points, and restaurants and melt them down into rainbow crayons.

We then take the rainbow crayons and split them into 3 categories:
1. Donate- We donate rainbow crayons to kid-friendly organizations to promote art and creativity in kids
2. Exchange- We exchange rainbow crayons for broken crayons in the school system.
3. Sell- We sell a large variety of rainbow crayons in various shapes and sizes. All profits will purchase school supplies for kids.

The project quickly grew and we realized we were unable to peel all the crayons ourselves. We contracted with a local company that provides job opportunities for developmentally disabled adults, and we now hire them to peel our crayons! It is a huge win-win. They are enjoying the job and we love supporting these wonderful adults by hiring them!

In just the first 4 months of this project, we have donated over 2,000 crayons and exchanged over 800 crayons for broken crayons. We have also saved over 100 pounds of crayons from the landfills.

While this project continues to grow, our favorite part is that ALL PROFITS of all sales buy school supplies for children. This is such a win-win. We are making beautiful crayons, giving them new life, inspiring kids through art, AND helping out kids by purchasing new supplies for them. THANK YOU for supporting our dream.
