About

Blending biology and art through the ocean's gardens

While working on my master's degree in marine biology, my favorite class was Marine Botany because we got to explore all our local Texas Gulf coast waters to create a marine plant herbarium and identify species we found. I absolutely loved snorkeling and wading through various habitats to find and identify all the different species.

Many years later, I still have a passion to create and decided to mix my love of biology and art to create artfully arranged pressed plant prints, much in the same manner as I did for graduate school.

Each work consists of various marine and coastal wetland plant and algae species collected locally then pressed. The originals are then professionally photographed and printed on archival cold press fine art paper. Prints are shipped to you in a protective sleeve with backerboard and are each signed and numbered on the back with the scientific information. Inventory will be dynamic as there are seasonal changes in species in local waters, so check back often for new pieces!

I hope my work can bring awareness to the importance of marine plants to the ecosystem and also bring a coastal-inspired look to your home or as a perfect gift to that special nature-lover that you know.

Frequently asked questions
Are these the original presses?

No. Due to the fragility of the original algal presses, we have chosen to have the originals professionally photographed and digitized then printed on archival cold press paper. The listings in this shop are for prints of the originals.

Custom and personalized orders

I may be able to do custom pieces depending on the species and size requested. Please contact me to discuss.

I am able to add a personal note attached to any print. Please contact me to discuss. Gift wrapping is not available, however, the prints are wrapped in tissue paper, tied with twine, and have a business card attached to them upon mailing.

Sizing details

Listings are only available in the sizes shown. If you desire a piece in a different size, please contact me to discuss if that may be possible.

Do the prints come framed?

Frames are not included at this time. The prints are done in common sizes though so you should find it simple to frame them in your home. For your order, you will receive just the print itself packaged with a rigid backerboard in a sealed plastic sleeve.

Where do my items ship from?

Your order will originate from either Texas or Oregon depending on if you purchased prints from Emily or Alyssa's special collection (see item descriptions for whose collection a print belongs to). Alyssa's prints will be shipped from Oregon and Emily's from Texas. If your order contains prints from both of us you will receive your items in two shipments, one from Oregon with Alyssa's prints and one from Texas with Emily's.

Where are your home decor items produced?

I work with two US-based printing companies to have my artwork printed on the pillows, pillow covers, tea towels, and coasters.

Where are the necklaces produced?

The Salt Botanics jewelry collection is a collaboration between myself and local artist Samantha with Alpacas Some Wine. I provide the pressed algae and floral specimens and she works her magic to put them in resin pendants, add gemstones, and assembles the necklaces.
