About

Artist, geologist, astronomer

I'm a full time artist and create both geology inspired drawings and large scale colourist paintings that involve my physics degree. On my "days off" (what's that?) I like to go to various beaches and bays here on the Yorkshire coast and collect fossils. Of an evening you might find me down on the beach with my telescope. Or perhaps studying at a local cafe. (I'm doing my 7th degree, an MSc in Space Science and Technology).

I am a member of the Institute of Physics, the Open University Geology Society, AXIS, and various art organisations. I also give public talks to art or astronomy groups about art and science combined - the history of science topics in art, how things like rock pigments and the colour spectrum are relevant to artists, or just why an artist would want to study science.

Born in Chicago, I moved to Scotland in my early 20s, and became a British citizen in my 40s. When moved to London I studied painting and printmaking privately with an artist in Greenwich. My academic background (and present; I have an enduring love of academia!) is both in the sciences and art. My university qualifications include geology, physics, human development, and Shakespeare. I now work from my studio on the English coast at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, with my studio "helper" Mort the bearded dragon.

The paintings have been shown at galleries across the country and are collected internationally. I’ve had to honour to exhibit with the Scarborough Art Gallery, Pastel Society, Royal Society of Marine Artists, the National Maritime Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, at the Derwent Art Prize, and galleries on Cork Street. Projects have included astronomy drawing workshops with the Essex Wildlife Trust, a drawing residency on the New Jersey coast, painting residency on the Newfoundland coast, and time at the National Maritime Museum using their historic Camera Obscura.
