Philosophy and Storytelling
As a drawer, I like to tell stories visually.
To have cognizance of the impact we are having on the environment and those with which we share it, is an undeniable responsibility we have bestowed upon ourselves. Within the past 30 years, there has been a 60% increase of populations in cities. Being a part of the generation to see this has provided me with a retrospect as well as an awareness of this change. As a young girl, growing up on a farm in the countryside of rural Georgia is a large inspiration for my imagery. Traveling back to my childhood home shows the extent of urban development in an impressive way. The fields in which I used play cowboys and Indians are now subdivisions. The woods I used to watch deer play are now cut into rows of power lines. The dirt roads are now paved and full of traffic.
The natural environments of woodland animals have been directly impacted by the exponential growth of cities. They quickly adapt to their environments, and therefore are evolving their instinctual behaviors to better fit into this urbanized habitat. Power lines are a symbol I use to represent the human touch found in the lives of these animals. By alluding to the power lines growing from the ground as trees, I am commenting on what is really growing.
Formally, my work establishes a poetic and extrinsic interpretation of natural habitats through free flowing ink and emphasis on specific elements. A narrative style allows for implied motivations but also intrigue relation and reaction to the piece. Sensibility is required, and this is my goal—to bring this to awareness.
Utilizing animals and children as symbols to describe my feelings towards deforestation, and growing up, I get to paint an elaborate decoration of what is in my head. What I actually decide to put on the paper is a way to hopefully reach an audience wanting to know what the story is about.
