I believe it’s possible for mixes to be eco-friendly and safe, while producing desired results. You can have it all! My mixes are better for you, your plants, and the planet.

Some store-bought potting soils contain man made fertilizers that don’t replicate the natural environment needed for healthy plants. Even the new organic soils sold in stores today contain ingredients like feather meal, poultry litter, and even “meat meal.” Yuck! I created a mix that will not only benefit your plants, but also help you garden in a way that is better for the environment. There are natural, renewable, upcycled alternatives to all the typical store-bought potting soil mixes that use unsustainable practices. And they work!

THE STORY
My vegetarian daughter wanted houseplants to improve her indoor air quality in her new apartment. She wanted to grow some herbs to cook with and to plant some vegetables and pretty flowers on her balcony. As a Master gardener for almost 20 years, I knew I could come up with something both of us would feel better using.
With encouragement from my family, we came up with “Smart Potting Soil,” a mix created with sustainable, non-toxic ingredients that no one would ever feel uncomfortable using in their own home. After a long process, I perfected a recipe for an environmentally friendly potting mix with strong growing results. Now everyone can garden guilt-free without sacrificing quality!

Coconut Coir
Substituting coconut coir for peat in potting mixes is a no-brainer. Peat bogs hold 10x the CO2 that forests hold and as a type of cold water wetland, we really should avoid digging them up! Some peat is chemically treated with a wetting agent, so it doesn’t repel water. If it’s not treated or the chemical is washed away, an impenetrable crust is formed which repels water. Coconut coir, on the other hand, is 100% organic, super-washed with fresh water (no chemical washes) to remove excess salts, lasts 3x longer than peat, pH neutral and is a natural waste by-product of coconut products (upcycled!). With a higher pH than peat, mold-resistant, and naturally easy to wet and re-wet, it has a higher water and air-holding capacity than peat, cutting down on fertilizer use with less runoff. Coir comes dry in a brick, crouton and chip form, as well as wet and dry in loose form.
Rice Hulls
Extremely light, upcycled rice hulls are the perfect replacement for perlite, which is a mined product. Rice hulls are formed after milling (removing the shells that surround rice). The hulls serve as a perfect growing medium that not only contributes nutrients (rich in silica and potassium), but also absorbs any off-odor and keeps the system clean and hygienic. Rice hulls are a product that would normally be thrown away, so putting them to extra use in hydroponics or growing media is a great upcycling opportunity.

Other ingredients are 100% earthworm castings, kelp meal, neem seed meal, non-gmo soybean meal, rock dusts & sands, microbial powder, humus

About

Only the best sustainable, renewable, & upcycled ingredients for your plants and the planet.

I couldn’t find potting soil for my containers I wanted to buy. (What is "meat meal" anyway? Yuck!) As a Master gardener, I knew I could come up with something I would feel better using.
With encouragement from my family, we came up with “Smart Potting Soil,” a mix created with sustainable, non-toxic ingredients that no one would ever feel uncomfortable using in their own home. After a long process, I’ve perfected the recipe to be the most environmentally friendly possible while still creating strong results. Now everyone can garden guilt-free without sacrificing quality!

All soilless mixes are hand mixed in my home by me. Just add water. All products have be used/tested by me (Master Gardener 2000). I wouldn't sell a mix if it wasn't hands-down better than anything else I could buy for my plants and the environment.

Care instructions

How much water (spring or rain is best) to add? 1.5 C for 1/2 gallon, 3 cups PER gallon for 1, 2, & 4 gallon. Succulent & Cactus can be a little less. All mixes have natural additives, so no need to fertilize.
